As you know, the big thing the past few years has been the almost
obsessive desire to make technology more human. Take Google's new
voice generating AI as an example: https://qz.com/1165775/googles-voice-
generating-ai-is-now-indistinguishable-from-humans/ However, there is a
large community who thinks differently, and I am one of the members of
this group. My personal belief is that instead of making computer voice
assistants more human, we should be endeavoring to create a new kind of
voice for technological devices. This voice would sound different than a
human voice in that it would be harder to determine a gender, making it
neither male nor female, but instead somewhere between the two registers.
The point of the voice is to assist and therefore the communication would
need to be natural and clear. The purpose of the voice would be to allow
the user to access information easily without a keyboard. We would ask for
something and then receive something. So I don't think we would need to
work hard to create a "human" identity for the service. Instead we could
work to develop a voice that belongs only to the service. A voice that is
neither completely masculine or completely feminine. Nor completely
human. However, I worry that if I write about this, I may be moving away
from what the client is looking for. What do you think? Should I just stick
to the "let's make this thing sound as much like a human being as
possible"? Or would it be OK if I discussed the idea of doing something a
little different than most voice assistants out there?
