ABSTRACT: Alternatives to improve soil properties with the addition of stabilizing materials such
as cement and lime is bringing the attention of researches, mainly with the intention of giving use to
soils often considered of low geotechnical quality. In this context, this work has the aim of
investigating the impact of cement addition on properties of strength and durability of bauxite mining
tailings compacted specimens. Mixtures of bauxite mining tailings with cement are analyzed by
varying the sample density and cement content. The amount of cement added to the specimen was
defined by replacing a small amount of tailings. The strength characteristics were evaluated by simple
compression tests conducted in 5 x 10 cm specimens. The durability was analyzed through 12 cycles
of wetting and drying, following ASTM D559, in 10 x 12,7 cm specimens. It was possible to correlate
the strength to simple compression with the density and cement contents and, as well as the percentage
of loss accumulated mass in each cycle of drying and wetting, for the most critical cementation
condition, for different densities.
