Embora o nome O'Leary carregue sua parcela de controvérsia devido a

algumas declarações muito questionáveis, o nome também conduziu a
Ryanair de uma companhia aérea, que transportava apenas 5.000
passageiros em 1986, para o grupo de companhias aéreas número um na
Europa. Michael O'Leary, que ingressou na Ryanair em 1988 como vice-CEO,
liderou a reestruturação da empresa para copiar o modelo de tarifas baixas
de uma das maiores companhias aéreas do mundo, a Southwest Airlines (
LUV ) para se tornar a primeira companhia aérea de baixo custo operadora
na Europa, de acordo com a página de histórico da empresa.

Declarações, como dizer à Boeing para “se recompor” com o 737 MAX ou
que os homens muçulmanos devem ser perfilados porque “é daí que vem a
ameaça”, tornaram-se uma ocorrência regular associada a O'Leary. Até a
própria companhia aérea não tem medo de andar na corda bamba com suas
campanhas publicitárias agressivas, incluindo o fato de que as páginas de
história da Ryanair destacam orgulhosamente que a companhia aérea de
baixo custo iniciou “a primeira guerra de tarifas na Europa” em 1987 nas
rotas Dublin-Londres.

Quando 2019 terminou e as companhias aéreas começaram a publicar seus 

resultados financeiros e, por sua vez, de tráfego, ficou claro que o Grupo
 Ryanair era o maior grupo de companhias aéreas da Europa. O grupo de
companhias aéreas de baixo custo com sede na Irlanda, que também inclui
Laudamotion, Malta Air e Buzz, transportou um total de 153 milhões de
passageiros. Seu rival próximo e agora amargo, o Grupo Lufthansa

timeline

1985
Ryanair starts operations in 1985 with a tiny
21-seat Embraer EMB 110 Bandeirante. The
airline finishes the year with 5,000
passengers solely operating the Waterford,
Ireland - London Gatwick (LGW) route.

1987
Ryanair acquires three BAC One-Eleve
1-11) aircraft on a wet lease basis from
Romania's national flag carrier, TAROM
BAC 1-11 becomes the first jet engine
powered aircraft operated by Ryanair.

route network to 15 destinations.

1994
After multiple years of operating various
aircraft, including the ATR 42 and BAC 1-11,
Ryanair receives its first Boeing 737 aircraft
in January 1994. Boeing delivers a total of 8
737s to Ryanair, as the carrier phases out its
BAC 1-11s.

1999
Ryanair receives its first Boeing 737
Next Generation aircraft, after placin
order for 45 (25 firm and 20 options)
March 1998.

2002
Ryanair increases its initial order of 45
aircraft to 250 Boeing 737s: 125 firm and
125 options. The deal, valued at over $6.5
billion (€6 billion) was the biggest order by
an Irish airline at that time.

2005
Ryanair retires the last 737-200s, end
fiscal year with 103 total aircraft: all B
737-800 NG.

 2013
Ryanair further commits to the Boeing 737
family with two huge orders: 175 of Boeing
737-800 NG and 210 (110 firm, 100
options) of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.

2019
Ryanair Group, including Ryanair, Buzz and Laudamotion ends FY2019 with 474 aircraft
Boeing 737s and 19 Airbus A320 aircraft (operated exclusively by Laudamotion).
