Introdução
Importantes avanços têm ocorrido nos programas de melhoramento animal no sentido de
permitir aceleração do progresso genético e maior difusão do material genético superior. Estes
avanços colaboraram para que a endogamia recebesse atenção especial de pesquisadores e
selecionadores.
Apesar do tema “endogamia” ser de grande importância em outras áreas como, por
exemplo, na preservação e manutenção da diversidade genética de diferentes raças e espécies,
o enfoque do presente trabalho foi feito no intuito de tentar esclarecer porque há preocupação
com a endogamia nos programas de melhoramento atuais. Antes, porém, alguns conceitos
primordiais serão discutidos.
