Introdução
Mesmo que estes ataques possam ser lançados contra muitas igrejas da
tradição protestante, e mesmo contra algumas igrejas calvinistas, é
simplesmente falso dizer que João Calvino não tinha interesse em missões. Na
verdade, Calvino enviou centenas de missionários para a França, o resto da
Europa, e mesmo para o Novo Mundo. A discussão a seguir, portanto, não
somente demonstrará que João Calvino tinha uma coerente teologia de
missões, mas provê um resumo de como sua teologia o levou a agir em seus
propósitos missionários através do mundo.
Uma importante dinâmica que toma efeito neste novo Reino é a destruição
da distinção entre judeus e gentios. Calvino frequentemente faz uso de Efésios
2.14 para insistir que a parede divisória entre judeus e gentios foi quebrada e o
Evangelho tem sido proclamado, de forma que “nós [judeus e gentios] fomos
reunidos juntos no corpo da Igreja, e o poder de Cristo é posto para sustentar-
nos e defender-nos” [7]. Desde que o reinado de Cristo se estende não
somente sobre os judeus, mas sobre o mundo inteiro, gentios são chamados
junto com os judeus ao Seu Reino [8]. É a inclusão dos gentios na comunhão
de Israel que permite que o Evangelho do Messias judeu seja proclamado aos
gentios por todo o mundo.
