Summary: In this article I invite the reader to know the afro-brazilian religiousness in
Pelotas, a city built by the charque industry in the development of its economy, a process
marked by slave labor. For that, I performed a bibliographic research about the matter, I have
talked with afro-brazilian religions federations and associations leaders in the city, aside from
researching about the legislation that proposes to create protection instruments for the terreiro
people. The methodological perspective that supports my research is that of the decoloniality,
I find it necessary to encounter a new way of thinking so that we all can understand cultures
diverse from euro centered ones, wich have traditions and forms of living inside a complexity
we do not know. One of the biggest challenges of studying the African originated religions is
the orality, something that outgrows the eurocentic understanding as a form of knowledge
production or transmission. This article does not deplete the proposed theme, my intention is
to induce the reflection about the importance of understanding the difference between
discourse and rhetoric when concerning public politics.

“Como uma alternativa à metafísica da “raça”, da nação e de uma cultura territorial fechada, codificada no corpo, a
diáspora é um conceito que ativamente perturba a mecânica cultural e histórica do pertencimento” (GIROY, 2012. As
religiões afro-brasileiras são por mim entendidas como afrodiaspóricas porque são um símbolo cultural que se expandiu por
meio da diáspora, da migração dos povos africanos pelo processo de escravidão.

roça, denominação mais comum no Candomblé.
