In Los Angeles, a car s not a luxury. It’s a necessity. Why? There are many reasons.
First, Los Angeles is a very big city, not only in population, but in area too. The distance between
the extreme north and the extreme south of L.A. is about eighty miles. (That’s about one hundred
and thirty kilometers!)
Second, L.A. has a terrible public transportation system. There is no subway (metro), and
there are not many buses.
Third, an Angeleno’s home (his house or apartment) is frequently far from his job or
school. In L.A., this is “normal”. Many people live in on e section of the city, but they work or go to
school in another section. In many cases, that other section is fifty miles (eighty kilometers) from
their homes.
Finally, Los Angeles has an excellent system of freeways. In L.A. there are hundreds of
cars on a freeway, actually, on two or three freeways. In the city of Los Angeles, there are more
than seven hundred miles (about 1,100 kilometers) of freeways. No other city has a system of
freeways like this.
Angelenos say that their cars are their second homes.
