We also use the verb SER to talk about our origin. In this case we have to options, we can say “I’m from
Portugal” or “I’m Portuguese”. Let’s see how we can say this in Portuguese.
Like in English, in Portuguese we use a preposition, the preposition we use is DE (from / of). However, in
Portuguese, as you already know, we use the definite article with the majority of countries and every time
we have the preposition DE with article, we have to contract them.

Professions ending with letter “-a” (like guia, cientista, florista, jornalista, etc.) or letter “-e” (like
intérprete, estudante, etc.) in masculine, doesn’t change in feminine. They stay the same, like in the

Have in mind that in Portuguese we don’t use the indefinite article with professions. When we use it, the
meaning is “one of many”. Read the examples:
