• When we use the verb “gostar” (to like), we always use the preposition “de” after the verb ( + article in case we
need it - do, da, dos, das).
Exemplos:
Gosto de chocolate. (in general, we don’t need the article)

Gosto de livros. (in general, we don’t need the article)
Gosto dos livros do Fernando Pessoa. (specific books, F. Pessoas’s books, so we need the article)
Gosto de música. (in general, we don’t need the article)
Gosto da música sérvia. (specific music, we need the article)
Have in mind the rules of “artigos definidos” that we saw in the beggining of our classes (Gramática Ativa – Unit 36)
Gosto de Portugal. (we never use article with Portugal)

Gosto da Sérvia. (we need the feminine article)
Gosto do Brasil. (we need the masculine article)
Gosto de Lisboa. (we don’t use the articles with cities)
Gosto de Novi Sad. (we don’t use the articles with cities)
Gosto do Rio de Janeiro. (we need the masculine article, “rio” also means river in Portuguese)
• When we talk about things we like to do or not, we use just “gostar” + preposition “de” + verb in infinitive (no
article).
Exemplos:
Gosto de ler. (I like to read).

Gosto de dormir. (I like to sleep).
Não gosto de correr. (I don’t like to run).

Não gosto de cantar. (I don’t like to sing).
• When we use the adverb “muito” (very much), we put the adverb between the verb and the preposition .

Exemplos:
Gosto muito de chocolate.
Gosto muito da música sérvia.

More verbs (regular) to talk about things that we like and we don’t like:
adorar (to adore) amar (to love) detestar (to detest)
With this verbs we NEVER use the preposition “de”

eu adoro amo detesto
tu adoras amas detestas
ele, ela, você adora ama detesta
nós adoramos amamos detestamos
eles, elas, vocês adoram amam detestam
Exemplos:
Eu amo ler. Eu detesto comer peixe.
Eu adoro viajar.
Eu amo os meus amigos. Eu detesto bananas.
Eu adoro chocolate.
