The 9 Parts of Speech
Noun
Nouns are a person, place, thing, or idea. They can take
on a myriad of roles in a sentence, from the subject of it
all to the object of an action. They are capitalized when
they're the official name of something or someone,
called proper nouns in these cases. Examples: pirate,
Caribbean, ship, freedom, Captain Jack Sparrow.
Pronoun
Pronouns stand in for nouns in a sentence. They are
more generic versions of nouns that refer only to
people. Examples: I, you, he, she, it, ours, them, who,
which, anybody, ourselves.
Verb
Verbs are action words that tell what happens in a
sentence. They can also show a sentence subject's state
of being (is, was). Verbs change form based on tense
(present, past) and count distinction (singular or plural).
Examples: sing, dance, believes, seemed, finish, eat,
drink, be, became
Adjective
Adjectives describe nouns and pronouns. They specify
which one, how much, what kind, and more. Adjectives
allow readers and listeners to use their senses to
imagine something more clearly. Examples: hot, lazy,
funny, unique, bright, beautiful, poor, smooth.
Adverb
Adverbs describe verbs, adjectives, and even other
adverbs. They specify when, where, how, and why
something happened and to what extent or how often.
Examples: softly, lazily, often, only, hopefully, softly,
sometimes.

Substantivo
Os substantivos são uma pessoa, um lugar, uma coisa
ou uma ideia. Eles podem assumir uma infinidade de
papéis em uma frase, desde o sujeito até o objeto de
uma ação. Eles são capitalizados quando são o nome
oficial de algo ou alguém, chamados de nomes próprios
nestes casos. Exemplos: pirata, Caribe, navio, liberdade,
Capitão Jack Sparrow.
Pronome
Os pronomes substituem os substantivos em uma frase.
São versões mais genéricas de substantivos que se
referem apenas a pessoas. Exemplos: eu, você, ele, ela,
isso, nosso, eles, quem, qual, qualquer um, nós
mesmos.
Verbo
Os verbos são palavras de ação que dizem o que
acontece em uma frase. Eles também podem mostrar o
estado de ser de um sujeito de sentença (é, era). Os
verbos mudam de forma com base no tempo (presente,
passado) e na distinção de contagem (singular ou
plural). Exemplos: cantar, dançar, acreditar, parecer,
terminar, comer, beber, ser, tornar-se
Adjetivo
Adjetivos descrevem substantivos e pronomes. Eles
especificam qual, quanto, que tipo e muito mais.
Adjetivos permitem que leitores e ouvintes usem seus
sentidos para imaginar algo mais claramente.
Exemplos: quente, preguiçoso, engraçado, único,
brilhante, bonito, pobre, suave.
Advérbio
Advérbios descrevem verbos, adjetivos e até mesmo
outros advérbios. Eles especificam quando, onde, como
e por que algo aconteceu e em que medida ou com que
frequência. Exemplos: suavemente, preguiçosamente,
frequentemente, apenas, esperançosamente,
suavemente, às vezes.

Preposition
Prepositions show spacial, temporal, and role relations
between a noun or pronoun and the other words in a
sentence. They come at the start of a prepositional
phrase, which contains a preposition and its object.
Examples: up, over, against, by, for, into, close to, out
of, apart from.
Conjunction
Conjunctions join words, phrases, and clauses in a
sentence. There are coordinating, subordinating, and
correlative conjunctions. Examples: and, but, or, so, yet,
with.
Articles and Determiners
Articles and determiners function like adjectives by
modifying nouns, but they are different than adjectives
in that they are necessary for a sentence to have proper
syntax. Articles and determiners specify and identify
nouns, and there are indefinite and definite articles.
Examples: articles: a, an, the; determiners: these, that,
those, enough, much, few, which, what.
Some traditional grammars have treated articles as a
distinct part of speech. Modern grammars, however,
more often include articles in the category of
determiners, which identify or quantify a noun. Even
though they modify nouns like adjectives, articles are
different in that they are essential to the proper syntax
of a sentence, just as determiners are necessary to
convey the meaning of a sentence, while adjectives are
optional.
Interjection
Interjections are expressions that can stand on their
own or be contained within sentences. These words
and phrases often carry strong emotions and convey
reactions. Examples: ah, whoops, ouch, yabba dabba
do!

Preposição
As preposições mostram relações espaciais, temporais
e de papel entre um substantivo ou pronome e as
outras palavras em uma frase. Eles vêm no início de
uma frase preposicional, que contém uma preposição e
seu objeto. Exemplos: para cima, sobre, contra, por,
para, em, perto de, fora de, à parte.
Conjunção
As conjunções unem palavras, frases e orações em uma
frase. Existem conjunções coordenativas,
subordinativas e correlativas. Exemplos: e, mas, ou,
então, ainda, com.
Artigos e Determinantes
Artigos e determinantes funcionam como adjetivos,
modificando substantivos, mas são diferentes dos
adjetivos, pois são necessários para que uma frase
tenha sintaxe adequada. Artigos e determinantes
especificam e identificam substantivos, e existem
artigos indefinidos e definidos. Exemplos: artigos: a, an,
the; determinantes: estes, aquilo, aqueles, bastante,
muito, poucos, qual, o quê.
Algumas gramáticas tradicionais trataram os artigos
como uma parte distinta do discurso. As gramáticas
modernas, no entanto, incluem mais frequentemente
artigos na categoria de determinantes, que identificam
ou quantificam um substantivo. Embora modifiquem
substantivos como adjetivos, os artigos são diferentes
porque são essenciais para a sintaxe adequada de uma
frase, assim como os determinantes são necessários
para transmitir o significado de uma frase, enquanto os
adjetivos são opcionais.
Interjeição
As interjeições são expressões que podem ficar por
conta própria ou estar contidas em frases. Essas
palavras e frases geralmente carregam emoções fortes
e transmitem reações. Exemplos: ah, ops, ai, yabba
abba do!

Ingles é falado em grupos de pensamento. Grupos de pensamento são frases e cláusulas que representam
segmentos de informações, e são usados para a construção de frases completas. No texto abaixo os grupos de
pensamento estão separados por hífens. Enquanto você lê em voz alta, pause um pouco onde os hífens estão.
Essas pausas frequentemente possuem uma duração mais curta do que uma vírgula. Em português também são
usados grupos de pensamento, por isso, quem fala português entenderá de uma forma muito mais fácil.

O inglês falado é uma linguagem de ênfase/ritmo. Sílabas específicas de determinadas palavras são enfatizadas e
ditas em um ritmo padrão. Enquanto você lê o texto a seguir dê ênfase às vogais em negrito. Tente expressá-las
no ritmo padrão. Preste atenção também à melodia de cada um destes grupos de pensamento. Nos grupos de
pensamento geralmente o tom da entonação desce, como se fosse uma descida.

As frases são traduzidas literalmente para português, com o intuito de ajudar o aluno iniciante a entender e
aumentar o vocabulário e aprender a estrutura da sentença em inglês.

“Every Day”
James Johnson - is my name. I work - in the main office - of a big company. Twenty
people -work - in that office - every day. Mr. Wilson - is my boss. He works - very hard.
Almost everyone – works - hard. Of course, a few people - don't work - hard.
James Johnson é meu nome. Eu trabalho no principal escritório de uma grande empresa. Vinte pessoas
trabalham na aquele escritório todos dias. Sr. Wilson é meu chefe. Ele trabalha muito duro. Quase todo
mundo trabalha duro. Naturalmente, alguns pessoas não trabalham duro.

Mr. Wilson – has - a private office. He also - has a secretary. Miss Stewart – is his
secretary. She helps - Mr. Wilson. She doesn't - help me. I don't have – a private office.
But - I have - my own secretary. My secretary - is Mary Peters.
Sr. Wilson tem um privado escritório. Ele também tem uma secretária. Senhorita Stewart é dele secretária.
Ela ajuda Sr. Wilson. Ela não ajuda me. Eu não tenho um particular escritório. Mas eu tenho meu próprio
