CAIXA ECONMICA FEDERAL 5 4 WERNER HABERKORN AND FOTOLABOR Werner Haberkorn is part of a generation of professionals, who arrived in Brazil, coming from Europe, between the late 1930s and World War II. Werner immigrated frst, and then came his brother Geraldo, with whom, in 1940, he founded Fotolabor, one of the largest producers of photo postcards in So Paulo. In addition to the production and sale of postcards, Fotolabor worked with the so-called industrial photography, producing product catalogues and serving the frst international advertising agencies established in Brazil, such as Thompson. The company operated in the city center for fve decades, between 1940 and 1990, when it closed down. Having opted for a functional and unadorned photography, Werner left a work that is still little known by scholars and photography critics in Brazil. His photographs have never aspired to celebrated visual art centers. On the contrary, they have always been part of the commercial and industrial dynamics of the city. Among skyscrapers and serial images of radios, televisions and decorative objects, his photography became known as the synthesis of two elements of the consumer society - visibility and reproducibility. Fotolabor thus reveals to be an appropriate name to defne Werners photography. Labor is the Latin word for work. It was the work with copies, photocopies and postcards that supported Haberkorns household in Brazil for decades. Fotolabor diversified its activities according to the demands of a city that entered the second half of the twentieth century with a rapidly growing consumer market. The photographic legacy of Werner Haberkorn, which includes records of two decades of intense activity, offers a unique opportunity to understand So Paulo in the 1950s. The Anhangaba Valley and its two viaducts - Santa Ifgnia and Ch - were privileged spaces on Fotolabors postcards and took great part in its photographic production. The success of Anhangaba Valley as preferred spot for landscape photography was no mystery. This region had all the elements for a modern picture of the state capital, with buildings representing its economic power, viaducts expressing the prevalence of the city movement over other forms of urban enjoyment, the coexistence of the tradition of European features present in the Municipal Theatre and the puissance of reinforced concrete skyscrapers. Thanks to Werners lenses, we can now follow the emergence of many skyscrapers. These are commercial, residential or mixed-use buildings. They appear in the urban context, portrayed and arranged in a way that privileges upward and downward takes and rotations providing contrast effects and inverted scales. With this representation, the buildings are the protagonists of the photographic visual, which gives So Paulo a metropolitan appearance in the image and likeness of New York. Also attentive to the horizontal growth of the city, Werner recorded the new urban icons of So Paulo, which emerged between 1940 and 1960: Pacaembu Stadium, Congonhas Airport, and engineering works that would most likely become famous landmarks of the city, such as the tunnels on Nove de Julho Avenue and Anchieta Highway. The Werner Haberkorn and Fotolabor exhibits brings together part of the photographs and documents that comprise the current collection of Paulista Museum, as well as other private collections of documents, allowing us to get to know a little more about the commercial photography on the 1950s, the decade that changed the face of the city of So Paulo. Werner Haberkorn It was in 1942 or 1943 that we started on this business of postcards. There was always a certain lack of service in the end of the year, when the industrial photography for product catalogues was scarce. We needed to fll that void with other things, so we started producing postcards. We had postcards of cities, hotels, resorts, things like that. Then, when postcards began to be printed in offset, many frms emerged. By 1960, we discontinued the manufacture of postcards because we could no longer produce them with the same quality and quantity of competitors. Vera Flieg, flha de Werner Haberkorn My father started photographing the city to make postcards. He photographed an urban landscape and two or three years after he realized that it was completely changed. Then, he would say: Lets make other postcards because this is different now. He though like that. This part of the city has changed a lot; we need to photograph it again. He produced postcards from around 1942 to 1958. That was exactly when the city went through many changes. Werner Haberkorn What I like the most about photographing? I would say that is not a product itself, but the variety. I do not like monotonous tasks and I also do not like to repeat a photograph. Our industrial customers were German, Italian, American, French, Spanish. It was from them that I learned how to think of each individual photograph. My experience tells me that when a Portuguese wants a photograph, the main thing for him is that the picture flls the whole paper because they do not like margins. Americans are men who want photos without shadows. The French, unlike Americans, want a completely shaded thing because they like the beauty, then, they want light and shadow. Italians are Latin, they want to show off, they like bright colors, many details. Each one has a different idea of how a photograph should be. Each is each. That is why I think we cannot say this picture is good, this one is not good. It is silly to talk like that about photography. Ricardo Mendes (RM) - Centro Cultural So Paulo, Diviso de Pesquisas, entrevista gravada com o senhor Werner Haberkorn, em 28 de julho de 1987, em seu apartamento na Alameda Casa Branca, Jardim Paulista, So Paulo. Senhor Werner, o seu nome completo Werner Haberkorn? Werner Haberkorn (WH) . Eu sempre voava em So Paulo e fotografava. 61 60 Werner Haberkorns statement to the researcher Ricardo Mendes, 1987. Multimeios Archive / So Paulo Cultural Center / So Paulo Department of Cultural Affairs / So Paulo Municipal Government Ricardo Mendes (RM), So Paulo Cultural Center, Research Division, recorded interview with Mr. Werner Haberkorn, on July 28, 1987, in his apartment on Casa Branca Alley, Jardim Paulista, So Paulo. Mr. Haberkorn, is your full name Werner Haberkorn? Werner Haberkorn (WH) - Yes. RM - Where and when were you born? WH - I was born on March 12, 1907, in a place is called Mislovitz, in Upper Silesia, Germany. I mean, when I was born it belonged to Germany, but then, for political reasons, it was handed over to Poland. I graduated in engineering in Germany, mechanical engineering, but photography was my hobby. My father was also a great admirer of photography and he worked with it. RM - An amateur photographer? WH - Amateur, always amateur. I traveled to Brazil once in 1936. I came here to make a movie because at that time in Germany many people wanted to emigrate. There was the Hitler problem and everybody wanted to leave the country, so we were looking for a place to go. I came here to Brazil and spent a month and a half here. I took pictures in So Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. They were photographs, lets say, of life, the factories, the streets... And then I lectured in Germany two or three times, using photographs to explain how Brazil was. Brazil was totally different then. The only tall building was the Martinelli Building. Then, in 1937, I came back to live in Brazil for good, I immigrated. RM - Did you come here in 1937? WH - In 1937, I came to Brazil as an immigrant. My brother Geraldo used to attend in Germany, at that time, in 1938/1939, an institute that was named Bermpohl. Bermpohl was the frst man to develop a system of color photography. And there, my brother learned about it. When he got back with this thing, we started making these color photographs together. We were the frst, I guess, to use this Bermpohl WERNER HABERKORNS STATEMENT system here in Brazil. But with the war, it was over. We did not have much material and we had to stop producing these photographs, so we started working with industrial photography. RM - When did Fotolabor started exactly? WH - It was around 1940. The business we opened at 108 So Joo Avenue was also born, in part, thanks to a photocopy machine that was imported by my brother. I think we were the second, I mean, here in So Paulo, to do this service, which was formerly called photocopy. There was a photographer on Quitanda Street, who was the frst to make photocopies here in So Paulo. He stayed on Quitanda Street, frst foor, and we were established on So Joo Avenue. When I started working with industrial photography - and I was, as I explained, an amateur photographer, it was my hobby - I brought a Leica camera from Germany, when I got here. This was a very famous camera. It was a 35 mm camera. When I started working with industrial photography, I realized that this Leica camera was not a camera that could compete with other market professionals. So I exchanged this Leica camera in Casa Kosmos on So Bento Street for a wooden camera, these old 18x24 cm cameras. And we worked with the 18x24 cm camera, the photographs that we delivered were photocopies, we rarely did photo enlargements, they were always copies. RM - Did Fotolabor have a big team, or it was only you and your brother? WH - In the beginning there were only two, then three. In the end, we had about 40 employees. After some time - I think it was in 1942 or 1943 - we started on this business of postcards. The company used to have a certain lack of work, always at the end of the year, when the industrial photography for product catalogs was scarce. We needed to fll that void with other things, so we started making postcards. Colombo was the frst to make photographic cards, and we were the second. The old Colombo was already doing it for some time, and we did like just like him. We were the only ones here who produced photographic cards at that time. Then, when the postcard began to be printed in offset, many frms emerged. By 1960, we discontinued the manufacture of postcards because we could no longer produce them with the same quality and quantity of competitors. And these postcards were postcards of cities, hotels and - and that was a big thing - soccer. RM - Really? WH - That was when Brazil became the country of soccer, I mean, these soccer postcards were our fagship product. Whenever we won a game or a championship, we would sell so many photographs that we worked day and night with the postcard machine on. When Brazil won the World Cup in 1958, we worked day and night with three automatic postcard machines. We opened the front door of the lab early and there were already hundreds of street vendors there, they had been waiting all night, fghting among themselves. They went to the streets with the postcards still warm from the dryer. They took a hundred, two hundred, and ran to sell them. They were back after half an hour, and had already sold all of them... It was crazy. And we also were, I think, one of the frst to make aerial postcards of Brazil, because I had a representative at the time, it think it was during the war, and this representative had a friend in the Ministry of Aviation, and I got a license to take aerial photographs of So Paulo. I used to fy over So Paulo and photograph it. RM - When did you open the branch on General Osrio Street? WH - What happened was the following: the offce we had on So Joo Avenue got too small, so we opened a big laboratory on Conselheiro Furtado Street. I mean, we also provided these services for photography stores. We were kind of in competition with Fotoptica. We would send the flms from So Joo Avenue to our laboratory on Conselheiro Furtado Street. And we had in the late 1950s, the photographic studio with the products on General Osrio Street. Then, in the 70s, we moved again to another building on General Osrio Street... and then we closed. RM - Was Fotolabor closed or sold? WH - I closed it because that business was, lets say ... actually it was the following: I was getting too old and I decided to close it. My employees at the time opened another photo service called Techfoto. I gave them all Fotolabors fles and machines, and they tried to keep the clientele.
