01
DEFINITION
Adverbs are words that modify (Advérbios são palavras que modificam)
• a verb (He drove slowly. — How did he drive?) - um verbo (Ele dirigia devagar. - Como ele dirigia?)
• an adjective (He drove a very fast car. — How fast was his car?) - um adjetivo (Ele dirigia um carro
muito rápido. - Qual era a velocidade do carro dele?)
• another adverb (She moved quite slowly down the aisle. — How slowly did she move?) - outro
advérbio (Ela se moveu muito devagar pelo corredor. - Com que velocidade ela se moveu?)
As we will see, adverbs often tell when, where, why, or under what conditions something happens
or happened. Adverbs frequently end in -ly; however, many words and phrases not ending in -ly serve
an adverbial function and an -ly ending is not a guarantee that a word is an adverb. The words lovely,
lonely, motherly, friendly, neighborly, for instance, are adjectives;
(Como veremos, os advérbios costumam dizer quando, onde, por que ou em que condições algo
acontece ou aconteceu. Advérbios frequentemente terminam em -ly; no entanto, muitas palavras e
frases que não terminam em -ly servem para uma função adverbial e que não são uma garantia de
que uma palavra seja um advérbio. As palavras amável, solitária, maternal, amigável, vizinhança, por
exemplo, são adjetivos:
That lovely woman lives in a friendly neighborhood.
(Essa mulher adorável mora em um bairro amigável.)
The ways taken did not solve the problem, unfortunately.
(Os caminhos tomadas não resolveram o problema, infelizmente.)

Veja os exemplos:
The children were very beautiful. The seller was very attentive.
Como pudemos notar, tanto em português como em inglês, os advérbios “very” / “muito“
permanecem idênticos em ambas as frases. No entanto, apesar de inflexíveis em relação a número
e pessoas, há advérbios que mudam a intensidade das frases, como veremos a seguir:
Intensity adverbs serve to change the meaning or give new information to: (Advérbios de intensidade
servem para mudar o sentido ou dar novas informações à:)

In this class, we will look at some particularities of a group of adverbs, adverbs of degree, or adverbs
of degree, which have two functions within phrases. Now they can appear as a superlative, sometimes
as a comparative.(Nesta aula, veremos algumas particularidades de um grupo de adverbs, os advérbios
de grau, ou adverbs of degree, os quais possuem duas funções dentro das frases. Ora podem surgir
como superlativo, ora como comparativo.)
6
A DV E R B S O F D E G R E E
Comparative
O grau comparativo pode transmitir as ideias de:
I. Superioridade / Inferioridade – Através da expressão ... MORE ... THAN ... / ... LESS ...THAN... que
significa ... mais ... do que... / ... menos ... do que ...
Exemplo:
Soccer is more popular than baseball in Brazil.
Futebol é mais popular do que baseball no Brasil.
Há casos em que o more é substituído por outro advérbio com sentido de superioridade. Nesses casso, são
pegos adjetivos e transformados em advérbios comparativos com a sufixação do fragmento -er. Por exemplo:
II. Igualdade – Usado para comparar a semelhança entre o grau das coisas.
Exemplo:
He is brave as well as loyal.
Ele é tão corajoso quanto leal.
Superlative
O grau superlativo transmite a ideia de superioridade absoluta não havendo margem sequer para
comparação.
O superlativo pode surgir de duas formas diferentes dentro de uma oração. Uma das formas é
adicionando o advérbio MOST (mais) e a outra é adicionando o sufixo –est a algum adjetivo:
Exemplos:
She is the most beautiful girl at school.
Ela é a garota mais bonita da escola.

EXERCÍCIO RESOLVIDO
What is the main difference between the comparative and superlative adverb gradation?
Qual a principal diferença entre a gradação do advérbio comparativo e superlativo?
Enquanto o advérbio comparativo cria uma relação de semelhança, superioridade ou inferioridade entre
dois ou mais elementos, o superlativo gera o sentido de que nada pode ser tanto quanto o valor do termo
agregado pelo advérbio ou sufixo - est.

CURIOSIDADE
Another widely used type of adverbs are those that, in Portuguese, copiously end with the suffix “-mente”. In
general, we can say that the suffix “-mente”, in the English Language, takes the form of “-ly”. Let’s see some examples
in the table below:
Outra espécie muito usada de advérbios são os de modo que, em Língua Portuguesa, copiosamente terminam
com o sufixo “-mente”. De forma geral, podemos dizer que o sufixo “-mente”, na Língua Inglesa, assume a forma de
“-ly”. Vamos ver alguns exemplos na tabela abaixo:

02 SIMILES AND HOMOPHONES
SIMILE
A simile is a phrase that uses a comparison to describe. (Um símile é uma frase que usa uma
comparação para descrever.)
For example: Life is like a box of chocolates: you never know which one you’re going to get.
You know you’ve spotted one when you see the words like or as in a comparison. (Você sabe que
viu uma quando vê as palavras como ou em comparação.)
Similes are like metaphors. But metaphors aren’t the same as similes. (Os símiles são como metáforas.
Mas metáforas não são iguais a símiles.)
Exemplo:
Metaphor contextualiza certa ambiguidade com o interlocutor, de modo que, se tal frase fosse
lida por um indivíduo o qual não aprecia o ato da leitura, automaticamente, subentenderia-se que
esse leitor interpretaria o comentário sobre a escola como pejorativo.
Similes are great for famous authors, public speakers, and folks who want to make their writing as
exciting as a spontaneous show of fireworks.(Os símiles são ótimos para autores famosos, oradores
públicos e pessoas que querem tornar a escrita tão emocionante quanto um show espontâneo de
fogos de artifício.)
12
SIMILES AND HOMOPHONES
LIKE E AS
Another phenomenon shown in this chapter is the ‘homophones’. A word of Latin origin that means
homo = equal and phones = sound, that is, ‘equal sound’. Thus, it is expected that at the end of this class
you will be able to recognize these figures of speech as well as learn and practice English vocabulary.
(Outro fenômeno que veremos neste capítulo são os ‘homophones’. Uma palavra de origem latina que
significa homo = igual e phones = sons, ou seja, ‘sons iguais’. Assim, espera-se que ao final desta aula
você seja capaz de reconhecer essas figuras de linguagem assim como aprender e praticar o vocabulário
de Língua Inglesa.)
13
LÍNGUA INGLESA . 55ºº ANO
HOMOPHONES
Dear / Deer, Bare / Bear, Witch / Which, They’re / Their / There – how should you pronounce
these words? English has so many sets of words with the same pronunciation but different spellings, it
can get pretty confusing.

TELLING THE TIME
03
TELLING THE TIME
WHAT TIME IS IT?
First, let’s Learn to Talk About the Time of Day (Primeiro, vamos aprender a falar sobre a hora do dia)
Numbers may tell you the exact time. However, many people will talk about the general time of day
instead of being specific. Here are words that you may hear and use when the exact time is not very
important. (Os números podem indicar a hora exata. No entanto, muitas pessoas vão falar sobre a hora
geral do dia, em vez de serem específicas. Aqui estão as palavras que você pode ouvir e usar quando
a hora exata não é muito importante.)
• NOON (Meio-dia)
Noon means 12:00 p.m., at the very beginning of the afternoon. (Significa 12:00, no início da tarde.)
“What time are we meeting this weekend?”
“Around noon, so we can sleep in.”
“A que horas vamos nos encontrar neste fim de semana?”
“Ao meio-dia, para que possamos dormir.”
• MIDDAY (Meio-dia)
This sometimes means the same thing as noon, because noon is in the middle of the day. Midday
can also be any time between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. (Às vezes, isso significa o mesmo que meio-dia,
porque o meio-dia está no meio do dia. O meio-dia também pode ser a qualquer hora entre as 11:00
e as 14:00.)
This is basically when people begin and finish eating lunch (meaning the middle of the day).
Isso ocorre basicamente quando as pessoas começam e terminam de almoçar (ou seja, no meio do dia).
“It is supposed to be very hot and sunny today at midday.”
“Deveria estar muito quente e ensolarado hoje ao meio-dia.”
19
LÍNGUA INGLESA . 55ºº ANO
• AFTERNOON (Tarde)
Because this phrase means “after noon passes” it is really versatile. This can be any time between
noon (12:00 p.m.) and before the sun sets (usually around 6:00 p.m.). If you do not live on the equator,
the time of the sunset is always changing with the seasons. Sunset might be at 4:00 p.m. in the winter
and 9:00 p.m. in the summer. This means that “afternoon” can be shorter or longer depending on the
season. (Como essa frase significa “depois do meio dia”, é realmente versátil. Pode ser a qualquer hora
entre o meio dia (12:00) e antes do pôr do sol (geralmente por volta das 18:00). Se você não mora no
equador, a hora do pôr do sol está sempre mudando com as estações do ano. O pôr do sol pode ser
às 16:00 no inverno e 21:00 no verão. Isso significa que a “tarde” pode ser mais curta ou mais longa,
dependendo da estação.)
“I’m busy all afternoon so let’s have dinner together tonight.”
• MIDNIGHT (Meia-noite)
Midnight means the middle of the night. However, now many people use it to mean 12:00 in the
morning (12:00 a.m.), when the next day begins. (Meia-noite significa o meio da noite. No entanto, agora
muitas pessoas usam para significar 12:00 da manhã (12:00 da manhã), quando o dia seguinte começa.)
The phrase midnight hours refers to any time between 12:00 a.m. and 3:00 in the morning (3:00 a.m.).
A frase meia-noite refere-se a qualquer horário entre as 12:00 e as 3:00 da manhã (3:00).
“People kiss on New Years Eve at midnight.”
“As pessoas se beijam na véspera de Ano Novo à meia-noite.”

04 ARTICLES
ARTICLES
Like in Portuguese, the articles in English come with a noun to indicate something generic, something
we don’t have sure about, something general (indefinite) or something specific, when we know exactly
what we are referring to (definite). But, different from the Portuguese, in English, it doesn’t change
genre and number. (Assim como na língua portuguesa, em inglês os artigos vêm acompanhados do
substantivo para indicar algo genérico, algo sobre o qual não se tem certeza, algo geral (indefinido) ou
algo específico, quando sabemos exatamente do que se refere (definido). Mas, diferente do português,
em inglês, os artigos não variam nem em gênero nem em número.)
Em português, temos vários tipos de articles, como o, a, os, as, um, uma, uns, umas. No entanto,
em inglês todas essas formas resumem-se em apenas the, a, an.
Examples:
I am a student.
Sou um estudante.
As we could see in the examples above, the articles, unlike what happens in Portuguese, do not inflect
in gender and, even less, in number maintaining their original form in any situations. (Como pudemos
perceber nos exemplos acima, os articles, diferentemente do que acontece em língua portuguesa, não
flexionam, em gênero e, tão pouco, em número, mantendo sua forma original em quaisquer situações.).
24
ARTICLES
Another situation in which we can use the definite article is to declare something about people,
groups, families, superlative adjectives, ordinal numbers, places or specific objects. (Outra situação em
que podemos utilizar o definite article é para declarar algo sobre pessoas, grupos, famílias, adjetivos
superlativos, números ordinais, lugares ou objetos específicos.)
Os artigos definidos o, a, os, as são traduzidos apenas pelo definite article the.
25
LÍNGUA INGLESA . 55ºº ANO
The indefinite article indicates that the nouns or equivalent words are in the singular and there is
also no defined masculine and feminine form. The general rule for the use of indefinite articles is that
we use the before words that begin with a consonant sound and an before words that begin with a
vowel sound.

He is
an honest man.

When more than one adjective comes before a noun, the adjectives are normally in a particular
