Emily Carr (1871-1945)

Emily Carr was born on December 13, 1871, in Victoria, British Columbia, to Richard
and Emily Saunders Carr. Carr began her training as an artist in her late teens. After
the death of both parents, rather than be subjected to the demands of her
overbearing sister Edith, Carr approached her legal guardian to secure funds to
attend the California School of Design. In 1907, she began documenting the First
Nations cultures of British Columbia. Carr continued to draw and paint throughout
the 1930s until a heart attack in 1937 left her bedridden and unable to paint. She
began to devote all of her creative energy to writing. Klee wyck, first published in
1941, was a huge popular success and a critical success as well: Carr was awarded
the Governor General’s Literary Award for non-fiction in 1941. Some of her other
titles were The book of small (1942), The house of all sorts (1944), Growing pains
(1946) and The heart of a peacock (1953). Emily Carr died in Victoria on May 2, 1945,
with no idea that she would ultimately become a Canadian icon.

DIANA HAD BEEN HOPING to get away by five, so she could be at the farm
in time for dinner. She tried not to show her true feelings when at 4:37
her deputy, Phil Haskins, presented her with a complex twelve-page
document that required the signature of a director before it could be sent
out the client. Haskins didn’t hesitate to remind her that they had lost
two similar contracts that week. It was always the same on a Friday. The
phones would go quiet in the middle of the afternoon and then, just as
she thought she could slip away, an authorization would land on her desk.
One glance at this particular document and Diana knew there would be no
chance of escaping before 6.

WHY DOES HAIR TURN GRAY?
Hair goes gray because pigment cells in the hair base at the roots of the hair
stop producing melanin. It doesn’t matter if you are fair-haired or dark-haired
you have the same chances of getting gray hair. However, it is more noticeable
in darker haired people. Graying of the hair generally starts at the age of
around 30 for males and 35 for females however since the onset of this
phenomenon varies greatly from person to person, age is not the most accurate
indicator. The graying of hair appears to be genetically determined but the
connection isn’t at all clear. So for now, your hair turning gray is just one of
those mysteries of science that we have yet to solve. But salt and pepper hair
always did look distinguished. Did you know? - Poliosis is the graying of the hair.
It comes from polios, the Greek word for “gray.”

Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon
Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon is a Brazilian modernist novel. It was
written by Jorge Amado in 1958 and it is widely considered one of his
finest works. The action of the novel begins in 1925 in the provincial
port of Ilhéus in Brazil’s northeastern state of Bahia.
The book tells two separate but related tales: first, the romance
between Nacib Saad and Gabriela. Second, it describes the political
struggle between the old guard of Cacao growers and the forces of
modernization, in the person of Mundinho Falcão.
It can be read simultaneously as an unusual, charming love story, a
description of the political and social forces at work in 1920s Brazil, a
somewhat satirical depiction of Latin American aspirations to
“modernity”, and a celebration of the local culture and pleasures of
Bahia.

TEXTO PARA AS PRÓXIMAS 4 QUESTÕES
A hybrid future
As the age of oil wanes, what will take its place?
A little of everything.
“Solutions wanted. No idea too weird.” If a classified ad could sum up the world’s energy
problem, this would be it. Experts generally agree that our current reliance on fossil fuels is
unsustainable. Already oil is near $50 per barrel, and the great millions of Chinese and Indians
destined to take to the road in the next decades have not yet gotten behind the wheel. If the
clamor over global warming seems apocalyptic now, just wait until those two countries are as
developed as the West.
At the same time, even with higher oil prices, clean energy sources like wind and solar - not to
mention hydrogen, an unproven technology barely off the drawing boards – don’t yet make
enough economic sense to replace oil. That’s why many experts are starting to talk of building a
hybrid economy. Rather than replacing hydrocarbons entirely, what we need to do is find ways to
use less oil - and use it more efficiently. This means changing everything from the kinds of cars
we drive, to the homes we live in, to the way we make and distribute electricity. It’s a revolution
in thought – and in the making.
(From A hybrid future, Special Report, Newsweek, Double Issue, September 6 /
September 13, 2004, page 33.)
