INTERPRETAÇÃO DE TEXTOS
TIPS ON READING ENGLISH FOR BRAZILIANS
“The principle [speech before writing] applies even when the goal is only to read” (Lado, 1964, p. 50).
necessário priorizar e antecipar o aprendizado oral.
Existem as figuras gramaticais do
vendedor lá no escritório).
frases afirmativas e negativas. O sujeito é sempre um nome próprio (ex: Paul is my friend), um pronome (ex: He's
my friend) ou um substantivo (ex: The house is big).
do verbo e do sujeito.
2
preposição normalmente altera substancialmente o sentido original do verbo. Ex:
8
turn on - ligar
turn off - desligar
turn - virar, girar
turn down - desprezar
turn into - transformar em
8. Use intuition, don’t be afraid of guesswork, and don’t rely too much on the dictionary.
origem latina. Podemos portanto confiar na semelhança. Por exemplo: bicycle, calendar, computer, dictionary,
exam, important, intelligent, interesting, manual, modern, necessary, pronunciation, student, supermarket, test,

ENGLISH IN WRITING
COMO REDIGIR CORRETAMENTE EM INGLÊS
Ricardo Schütz
Atualizado em 26 de fevereiro de 2009
INTRODUÇÃO
In Portuguese, if the reader does not understand what he reads, he may think he is not intelligent or
knowledgeable enough to understand the writer, while in English most likely the writer is the one who takes the
blame.
explicadas sob a nova ótica.
pronome IT deve ser usado.
A salesman came to the office the other day.
Acaba de fracassar uma estratégia publicitária das mais One of the most creative publicity strategies has

The representative of our creditor banks attended

Exemplo:
During my vacation in July, when I went to the south of Last July I went on vacation in the south of France and
France and other parts of central Europe, I bought other parts of central Europe. I bought many souvenirs and
many souvenirs and I saw many interesting places, saw many interesting places. Some of the places I visited
both the normal tourist sites and the lesser known were the normal tourist sites, and others were lesser
locations. known locations.
No inglês temos expressões como: absolutely, as a matter of fact,
actually, really, it seems to me, you know, etc., as quais pouco ou nada acrescentam à mensagem. Observe o
seguinte exemplo:
Impróprio: Correto:
As a matter of fact, I'm absolutely tired. Actually that's the reason I don't want to go to the movies tonight
why I don't really want to go to the movies tonight. because I'm tired.

Exemplos:
The cat ate the mouse. O gato comeu o rato. Voz ativa.
The mouse was eaten by the cat. O rato foi comido pelo gato. Voz passiva.
The mouse was eaten.
No inglês

Exemplos:

The structure of a text is how it is put together. No text will make sense unless it is structured in a clear
way. At the very least, it should have a beginning, a middle and an end.
• Planning
• Beginnings
• Endings
• Layout
Structure - Planning
The beginning should introduce the subject. The writer wants to catch the reader's attention and hint at what is to
come. If the beginning is poor, the reader could lose interest quickly and stop reading.
The middle section presents the main ideas, thoughts, actions and so on. These will often be presented in stages
or with several twists and turns of argument.
The ending generally sums up the piece of text, or makes a final point, or brings a conclusion to a story.
It can add to your marks in a test if you show a plan of how you are going to answer a long question.
A writer will usually plan not only what they are going to write, but also how they are going to write it. For example,
how would a writer plan a magazine article about the benefits of health and fitness?
Imagine you are writing a plan for a magazine article about fitness and health.
6. Ending: get fit and eat healthy food and you will benefit
This is an example of quite a straightforward plan. Each box contains a summary of a paragraph and they are
organised in a way that steers the reader through a journey. Obviously, the more complex the issue, argument,
story, and so on, the more complex the plan will be.
Structure - Beginnings
The beginning of a text is crucial to its success. If the start is weak, there is a risk that the reader will lose interest
and stop reading it.
Let's consider some alternative beginnings and see if they are suitable. Decide what you think of each one and
then read our comments below.
Alternative 1
Alternative 2
Structure - Endings
How a text ends is just as important as how it begins. Good endings should leave the reader feeling satisfied.
In conclusion, both sides of the debate have solid foundations. As has been shown, the arguments for and against
have been put forward since boxing began. And, it would seem, the argument will continue for at least the
foreseeable future, as compromise seems unlikely. Both sides do agree, however, that the debate is better held
whilst boxing is licensed and controlled rather than unlicensed and uncontrolled. The latter would make it, in my
opinion, neither sport nor spectacle.
As you can see, the writer clearly signals that the end is approaching by using the connecting phrase "In
conclusion". It maintains the impersonal approach it set out with by stating that the argument will continue and that
"compromise seems unlikely". The last sentence is a statement of the writer's own opinion, but this doesn't alter the
fact that it is, or has been, a discursive text.
So, when answering how effective the beginning or ending of a text is, here's a quick checklist you might find
helpful:
An effective beginning
• Does it capture your attention quickly?
• Is it relevant?
• Does it use language in the same way as the rest of the text?
An effective ending
• Is it satisfying? Do you really feel that the text is complete?
• Is it relevant?
17
Structure - Layout
Certain texts, especially non-fiction, will be laid out in ways that capture interest and attention, to make
information clear, or to help you find what you want to read. You will not be asked to write in detail about how a text
is laid out until GCSE, but your teacher may ask you a short question on layout.
Scan over the following text and note down at least four things the writer has done to make it look more interesting
and easy to read.
Underneath the chapel building there is reputed to be a long tunnel (not unusual), running to Castle Rising - a
distance of 18km/12 miles (very unusual). An unfortunate, drunken fiddler once decided to explore the dark
passageway with his instrument, his dog and his pint! He never reached the end of the tunnel, wherever it went, but
his spirit remains and can be heard on occasions playing his tunes and singing, accompanied by the whining of his
poor dog!
Places of Interest in the Neighbourhood
• The large, bold writing of the heading and unusual font catches our attention.
• Bold writing is used for the subheadings, which list the location details.
• These details are separated from the rest of the text so they are easy to follow.
• The most interesting fact, about the haunting, is mentioned first, and kept in a short paragraph of its own.
• Another bold subheading is used to draw attention to "Places of Interest in the Neighbourhood".
• These places are listed, using bullet points to make them clear.
Paragraphs – Introduction
Paragraphs are the building blocks of all texts. They divide texts into sections so it's easier to understand
what's being said.
Writing Techniques
In this section you will find information regarding the ability of writing. It is designed to help you understand the
different parts of a written composition. To the left you will find several titles that will be useful to you. Click on each
one to be transported to its corresponding explanation. We hope this information is helpful to you and that it will
contribute greatly to your writing style.
The Paragraph
A paragraph is a basic unit of organization in writing in which a group of sentences develops one main idea. The
number of sentences a paragraph contains is not important. It can be as short as one sentence or as long as nine
sentences, the most important thing is that the idea stated at the beginning is clearly developed.
Parts of a Paragraph
Three essential parts compose any paragraph: a topic sentence, supporting sentences and a concluding
sentence.
1. Topic Sentence: it states the main idea of the paragraph. It contains the name of the topic that is to be carried
out. This sentence has to be precise, but avoid telling everything in the first sentence or your reader will lose
interest. The topic sentence serves to limit the topic to one or two areas that will be discussed entirely in the space
of one paragraph. The area is what we call the controling idea.
19
2. Supporting Sentences: they come after the topic sentence, making up the body of a paragraph. they help
develop the topic sentence. It means that these sentences explain the topic by giving reasons, examples, facts,
statistics, and quotations.
3. Closing Sentences: it´s the last sentence in a paragraph, it indicates that the paragraph is ending and sums up
important points to remember or reprises the main idea. You write it restating the main idea of a paragraph but
using different words.
In adition to the three parts of a paragraph, a good paragraph also needs two important elements: unity and
coherence. Unity: it means that in your paragraph you discuss one and only one main idea which is stated in the
topic sentence and then developed by the supporting sentences. Coherence: it means that your paragraph is easy
to read and understand because:
Prewriting a Paragraph
The prewriting stage is when you think carefully and organize your ideas for your paragraph before you begin
writing. There are six steps involved in this process. They are the following:
1. Think carefully about what you are going to write. Ask yourself: "What question am I going to answer in this
paragraph or essay? How can I make this paragraph interesting? What facts can be stated to support this topic?
2. Write your answers to the above questions and do not need to spend a lot of time doing this. Just write enough
to help you remember why and how you are writing.
3. Collect facts related to your topic. Write down facts that will help you answer your questions.
4. Write down your own ideas. Ask yourself: What other things can I include about this topic? Why should people
be interested in this topic? Why is this topic important?
5. Find the main idea of your paragraph: Chose the most important point. If you cannot decide which is the most
important one, just chose one and stick to it throughout your paragraph.
6. Organize your facts and ideas to develop your topic, find the best way to tell the reader about it. Decide which
facts will support the main idea.
Writing a Paragraph
The writing stage is when you turn your ideas into sentences and you communicate them. Some important steps
are the following:
* Write a topic sentence, some supporting sentences, and one closing sentence
* Make sure that the sentences are clear, simple, and they express what you really mean
* Re-read what you wrote and see if the idea is clear and you can read it with ease
Editing a Paragraph
The editing stage is when you check your paragraph for mistakes and correct them. Do not forget to do the
following:
* Read your text again and make sure each sentence makes sense
20
An essay is usually a short piece of writing. It is often written from an author's personal point of view. Essays can
be literary criticism, political manifestos, learned arguments, observations of daily life, recollections and reflections
of the author.
In its broadest sense, ‘essay’ may refer to just about any short piece of nonfiction:
• an editorial,
• a feature story,
• a critical study,
• even an excerpt from a book.
However, a literary definition of ‘essay’ is usually a bit more complex, drawing distinctions between an ‘article’,
which is read primarily for the information it contains, and an ‘essay’, in which the pleasure of reading takes
precedence over the information in the text.
An essay can have many purposes, but the basic structure is the same. You may be writing an essay to argue for a
particular point of view or to explain the steps necessary to complete a task. Either way, your essay will have the
same basic format. If you follow a few simple steps, you will find that the essay almost writes itself. You will be
responsible only for supplying ideas, which are the important part of the essay anyway.
Here are some steps that can guide you when writing an essay:
Parts of an essay
Example
Hockey has been a part of life in Canada for over 120 years. It has evolved into an extremely popular sport
watched and played by millions of Canadians. The game has gone through several changes since hockey was
first played in Canada.
Supporting Paragraphs
To connect your supporting paragraphs, you should use special transition words. Transition words link your
paragraphs together and make your essay easier to read. Use them at the beginning and end of your paragraphs.
Examples of transition words that can help you to link your paragraphs together:
Like all good paragraphs, each supporting paragraph should have a topic sentence, supporting sentences, and a
summary sentence.
• What is a summary paragraph?
• What does it do?
• How do I write one?
21
The summary paragraph comes at the end of your essay after you have finished developing your ideas. The
summary paragraph is often called a "conclusion."
Example
Overall, the changes that occurred in hockey have helped to improve the game. Hockey is faster and more
exciting as a result of changes in the past 120 years. For these reasons, modern hockey is a better game than

Prewriting Essays
What is the prewriting stage?
The prewriting stage is when you prepare your ideas for your essay before you begin writing. You will find it easier
to write your essay if you build an outline first, especially when you are writing longer assignments.

Understanding the principles of good writing, like understanding how to swim, is fairly easy. Putting this
understanding into practice, on the other hand, requires a lot of time and effort. The following links offer practice
activities for applying what you've learned.
EXERCISE
Instructions: This student paragraph should be broken into four separate paragraphs. Drag the following
paragraph markers into the places you think the paragraph should be broken. When finished, click on "check your
answer" below to see if you broke the paragraph correctly.
Peter Singer was born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1946. A professor of bioethics at the University Center for
Human Values, Princeton University, Singer is the author of Practical Ethics, one of the most widely used texts in
applied ethics, and Rethinking Life and Death, which received the 1995 National Book Council's Banjo Award for
non-fiction. As one of the most influential philosophers of the twentieth century, Peter Singer in "The Singer
Solution to World Poverty" tries to draw the attention of the readers to the fact that together wecould solve the
problem of world's poverty, or at least minimize it. He is not only writing about his solutions to this problem in his
article, but puts himself as a personal example. The New York Times mentioned that he donates one-fifth of his
income to the poor, and wants to convince his audience to participate in helping. Although helping the poor is one
of the most humane actions in our cruel world, he goes much too far by considering extreme charity our
responsibility when it in fact such extremes aren't required for morality. First of all, I don't think that we, hard-
working citizens are responsible for those careless mothers and fathers whose children who are thrown on the
street. I don't find it fair that we should pay one-fifth of our income for strange children while their own parents might
live well and even enjoy life. We might help those children out of charity, but we are not obliged to take over the
responsibility of freeriders. Why should we pay for something what is not our fault? If parents cannot care for their
children, they shouldn't have had them in the first place. We simply cannot be sure that the money we pay for
charity goes to the needy and not in the pocket of the agency or organization. Even Singer admits that the actual
amount which reaches its target is less than the amount donated. In addition, it should be the government's job to
allocate money for charity since citizens pay a substantial amount of tax. The government has many possibilities of
helping the poor directly and indirectly through this collective tax. Instead of spending millions of dollars on
militaryand on projects that benefit elites, for instance, more SOS children villages could be built. In this way the
poor would be provided for without each citizen emptying his pocketbook beyond the standard required tax.
Finally, Singer's claims rest on a narrow view of what it means to be moral. Claire Andre and Manuel Velasquez, in
"Word Hunger: A Moral Response," that "our moral duty is always to act in ways that will maximize human
happiness and minimize human suffering." In other words, we are entitled to our money to maximize our human
happiness. We are already paying a lot. A certain and a quite high percentage goes to the government as taxes
23
and insurances; a big part is spent on living, and we are entitled to use the rest for relaxation and entertainment.
Relaxation and entertainment--as elements of our human happiness -- is our entitlement as human beings. It's our
hard earned money, and we should be free to decide how we would like to spend it. In conclusion, life doesn't only
consist of work and responsibilities. Dan Roentsch says, 'Life is not all restricted consumption and delayed
gratification. It offers evidence to your senses that your life is good." In other words, life is not about giving up all
comforts, luxuries, and personal joys in order to maximize survival of every living being. It is of course admirable for
people to give away the things they don't need any more to the needy and poor; but these same people certainly
have the right to buy new things for themselves because they are working hard for the money. Singer's logic just
leads to absurd conclusions. After everyone pays a part of his/her income for charity, what would be his next step?
Asking us to take a strange child in our home and care for it? Or not to get our own children at all and take children
from the street instead? I understand that his point of view is humanity, but in my opinion he goes much too far.
Instructions: Figure out what a possible topic sentence would be for the following paragraphs, and write it in the
box provided. Then check your answer.
1. There are three large banana trees and two coconut trees that give shade. Besides trees, there are numerous
well-manicured shrubs that outline the backyard and give it some aesthetic shape. In addition to the shrubs,
countless flowers are positioned along each dirt well, magnifying the whole scene with resplendent color. This
greenery adds a priceless peace and tranquility to an otherwise crowded and noisy city.
2. The gathering stage consists of researching, brainstorming, and analyzing in order to come up with a thesis. The
next stage, organization, requires you to think about a logical and persuasive arrangement for your various ideas.
The writing stage requires you to sit down and, following and outline, construct your essay. The fourth and final
stage involves endless revision: going over and over what you've written to make it better.
3. First, get a couple of eggs from the fridgerator, and after cracking them open, stir them together with a fork until
evenly blended. Second, add a little milk and vanilla, and then begin dipping your toast in the mixture until the egg
soaks into the bread. Third, cook the pieces on a low temperature in the skillet for five minutes, standing close by to
ensure that it doesn't burn. When finished, serve with syrup, whip cream, and your favorite jam.
4. The Queen directs and orchestrates the actions, instincts, and characters of all other ants in the colony. She
controls how much each ant develops, and into what kind of worker--drone, protector, warrior, etc. In addition to the
clearly defined social system, ants also have an advanced chemical communication system in which they trade
scents and smells with each other through chemicals to communicate. This is why any olfactory interruption in an
ant-line disorients the ants. Those persons who nonchalantly step on ants miss out on this fascinating
microuniverse.
5. Not only do you have to know and understand how to work many complex programs to be a marketable,
employable worker in the job market, you also--as a consumer--need to know how to navigate online shopping
24
carts, auctions, and other e-commerce strategies. It is no longer just a technical enhancement to what you're
doing--knowing the technical side is a requirement to staying afloat. The e-learning requires knowing how to
navigate the net to find necessary information online, to communicate with people from afar using proper netiquette
to interact and exchange data, and organizing oneself in an online web space in an efficient and trustworthy way.
Paragraph example 1
The first example shows how new paragraphs can be started on the next available line, but with the first word
beginning slightly to the right, or indented.
We've just come back from a lovely holiday in Southsea. The weather was glorious and Albert has still got a
deep, golden glow from the sunshine. It's a pity it can't be like that all year round.
The hotel we stayed in was spotless. We felt like royalty because the bedsheets were changed twice, in the
same week! I told Albert not to get too used to it as I wasn't going to carry that sort of thing on when we got home.
We also got nice, clean fluffy towels every other day too.
'Holes' - Louis Sachar
Paragraph example 2
The second example shows how new paragraphs can be started by missing a line. In this type of example,
indenting the first new word is not necessary.

a) The volcano's first recorded eruption was in 1500 BC, and it is believed to have erupted about 200 times since.
b) One of the mountain's most dramatic eruptions lasted four months, from March to July of 1669. That eruption
caused great damage to surrounding areas, submerging a dozen villages in western Catania, including the village
of Nicolosi, which is currently under threat by lava from the latest eruption.

c) But Etna's eruptive behaviour has changed over the past 400 years.
d) For nearly a century following the 1669 eruption, Etna's output is believed to have been very low. A flank
eruption in 1755, however, brought about several years of volcanic activity, including overflow of lava.
e) A huge eruption in 1865 was among the largest since 1669. A few weeks after the end of that eruption, a
devastating earthquake (measuring about 4.7 on the Richter scale) in the area killed more than 70 people near the
village of Macchia.

Choose which writing style would be best suited to the following examples.
A topic sentence
A topic sentence is a key sentence is an article, that relates directly to the topic being covered in that text, or
paragraph of that text.
If you are reading a text on a particular topic, there will probably be a key factual or opinion based sentence in it
that is core to the piece.
Picking these out will help you see the argument that the author is developing.
ANALYZING A PASSAGE
In writing about literature or any specific text, you will strengthen your discussion if you offer specific passages from
the text as evidence. Rather than simply dropping in quotations and expecting their significance and relevance to
your argument to be self-evident, you need to provide sufficient analysis of the passage. Remember that your over-
riding goal of analysis writing is to demonstrate some new understanding of the text.
1. Offer a thesis or topic sentence indicating a basic observation or assertion about the text or passage.
2. Offer a context for the passage without offering too much summary.
3. Cite the passage (using correct format).
4. Then follow the passage with some combination of the following elements:
o Discuss what happens in the passage and why it is significant to the work as a whole.
o Consider what is said, particularly subtleties of the imagery and the ideas expressed.
o Assess how it is said, considering how the word choice, the ordering of ideas, sentence structure,
etc., contribute to the meaning of the passage.
28
o Explain what it means, tying your analysis of the passage back to the significance of the text as a
whole.
5. Repeat the process of context, quotation and analysis with additional support for your thesis or topic
sentence.
As atividades desta aula
adquirido.
Objetivos
To start with...
Atividade 1
Atividade 2
Leia o texto abaixo e responda às questões propostas. Observe as palavras conhecidas a fim de
facilitar a compreensão do conteúdo abordado no texto, bem como chaves tipográficas (números
que indicam data, ano, tempo etc.).
The city of Rio de Janeiro has been elected as the Host City of the
Games of the XXXI Olympiad in 2016 following a vote by the International
Olympic Committee (IOC) Session. IOC President Jacques Rogge made
the announcement at the close of the first day of meetings of the IOC’s
121st Session in Copenhagen, Denmark. Rio de Janeiro received 66
votes compared to Madrid’s 32 in the final round of voting.
A Sporting Celebration
Rio 2016 will provide the best possible environment for peak
performances. Athletes will enjoy world-class facilities, including a superb
village, all located in one of the world’s most beautiful cities, in a compact
layout for maximum convenience. The competition venues will be
clustered in four zones – Barra, Copacabana, Deodoro and Maracanã – and connected by a high-
performance transport ring. Nearly half of the athletes will be able to reach their venues in less than 10
minutes, and almost 75 per cent will do so in less than 25 minutes. Of the 34 competition venues, of which
18 are already operational, eight will undergo some permanent works, seven will be totally temporary and
nine are constructed as permanent legacy venues.

Vamos ver a definição dessa
estratégia.
What is Scanning?

In 1930, Vannevar Bush built the first analog computer, which was used to help aim guns in
World War II. In the period between 1938-1942, John V. Atanasoff and Clifford Berry
34
designed and built the first electronic digital computer, the ABC, which provided the basis for
the development of the ENIAC.
In 1822, Charles Babbage built a machine called “The Difference Engine,” which he showed
at The Paris Exhibition in 1855. During the same period, Lady Ada Lovelace invented an
arithmetic code for Babbage’s machine based on a binary system similar to the one used
with modern computers. For this reason, she is considered to be the first programmer.
The modern computer as we know it today is a result of lots of research and inventions of the
past. The following paragraphs will show you the evolution of this miraculous machine.
In the period called the Scientific Revolution, which began circa 1540 and lasted until 1687,
many scientists tried to find ways of calculating. As a consequence, other computational
devices were invented. In 1642, Blaise Pascal invented the first mechanical calculator. In
1673, Gottfried von Leibniz invented another calculating device.
35
The Scientific Revolution was followed by the Industrial Revolution, which started in England
and brought many advances in technology. Several machines were developed in this period,
and these machines later had a great impact on the development of computers.
Between 1943 and 1946, funded by the U.S. Army, John Mauchly and J. Eckert built the first
major eletronic digital computer using vacuum tubes. The ENIAC (Electronic Numerical
Integrator and Computer) was huge and weighed about 30 tons.
The developments which took place during World War II led to the advances made in the
36
period that followed the war. The period after the war led to the subsequent generations of
computers, which may be described as the modern age of computers.
In 1944, Howard Aiken and some engineers from IBM completed MARK 1, an electro-
mechanical calculating device controlled by punched cards. This first digital computer could
figure out long lists of mathematical problems and was used military ballistics.
To conclude...

To start with...

You'll have a lot to say this month, Pisces, and several planets in sturdy, no-nonsense Taurus will
help you to get it all out, no matter who happens to be in the vicinity or what their opinion might be
about what you have on your mind. Once the 17th arrives, however, and Mercury turns retrograde
in your house of communications, you'll likely find that most of your conversations, if not all, will
be centered on the past. It's good to clear the air and let things go, but don't get stuck on what's

Você conseguiu responder corretamente a todas as perguntas?
What is skimming?

What Is a Computer?
(I) Nowadays, in most modern societies, almost everybody has an idea about what a computer is.
We depend on computers in every aspect of our lives whether we know how to use one or not. But
does everyone really know how a computer works inside?
(II) A computer is an electronic machine which processes data and provides the results of the
processing as information. There are three basic steps in the computing process. The first one is
input, which consists of feeding data into the computer’s memory. Then comes the processing: the
program is run and the computer processes the data by performing a set of instruction. The third
and final step is the output furnished by the computer, which allows the user to see the results
either in printed form or on the screen.
(III) The world of computers has created a specific language of its own. English words such as
software and hardware are used worldwide and have been borrowed by many different languages.
Software is information in the form of data and programs, and hardware refers to the electronic and
mechanical parts that make up a computer system.
(IV) Despite the constant presence of computers in most societies, it is a great mistake to believe
that everybody in the world is computer-literate, i.e., is familiar with computers and knows how to
use them properly. In some contemporary societies, many people still have no idea about the
existence of computers, and even in the so-called developed countries, there are lots of people
who do not know or do not care about what a computer is.

Procure utilizar as instruções e dicas apresentadas nesta
aula.

Which man looks guilty? If you picked the man on the right, you’re wrong. Wrong for judging people based
on the color of their skin. Because if you look closely, you’ll see they’re the same man. Unfortunately, racial
stereotyping like this happens every day. On America’s highways, police stop drivers based on the color of their
skin rather than for the way they are driving. For example, in Florida, 80% of those stopped and searched were
black and Hispanic, while they constitute only 5% of all drivers. These humiliating and illegal searches are
violations of the Constitution and must be fought. Help us defend your rights. Support the ACLU. www.aclu.org

RESPOSTA
First of all, I don't think that we, hard-working citizens are responsible for those careless mothers and
fathers whose children who are thrown on the street. I don't find it fair that we should pay one-fifth of our income for
strange children while their own parents might live well and even enjoy life. We might help those children out of
charity, but we are not obliged to take over the responsibility of freeriders. Why should we pay for something what
is not our fault? If parents cannot care for their children, they shouldn't have had them in the first place. We simply
cannot be sure that the money we pay for charity goes to the needy and not in the pocket of the agency or
organization. Even Singer admits that the actual amount which reaches its target is less than the amount donate.
In addition, it should be the government's job to allocate money for charity since citizens pay a substantial
amount of tax. The government has many possibilities of helping the poor directly and indirectly through this
collective tax. Instead of spending millions of dollars on militaryand on projects that benefit elites, for instance, more
SOS children villages could be built. In this way the poor would be provided for without each citizen emptying his
pocketbook beyond the standard required tax.
Finally, Singer's claims rest on a narrow view of what it means to be moral. Claire Andre and Manuel
Velasquez, in "Word Hunger: A Moral Response," that "our moral duty is always to act in ways that will maximize
human happiness and minimize human suffering." In other words, we are entitled to our money to maximize our
human happiness. We are already paying a lot. A certain and a quite high percentage goes to the government as
taxes and insurances; a big part is spent on living, and we are entitled to use the rest for relaxation and
entertainment. Relaxation and entertainment--as elements of our human happiness -- is our entitlement as human
beings. It's our hard earned money, and we should be free to decide how we would like to spend it.
In conclusion, life doesn't only consist of work and responsibilities. Dan Roentsch says, 'Life is not all restricted
consumption and delayed gratification. It offers evidence to your senses that your life is good." In other words, life
is not about giving up all comforts, luxuries, and personal joys in order to maximize survival of every living being. It
is of course admirable for people to give away the things they don't need any more to the needy and poor; but
these same people certainly have the right to buy new things for themselves because they are working hard for the
money. Singer's logic just leads to absurd conclusions. After everyone pays a part of his/her income for charity,
what would be his next step? Asking us to take a strange child in our home and care for it? Or not to get our own
children at all and take children from the street instead? I understand that his point of view is humanity, but in my
opinion he goes much too far.
