Abstract
Shape Memory Alloys (SML) have the ability to recover a pseudoplastic deformation from the
application of heat to the material, which is sufficient to bring the material to the austenitic state. The
Shape Memory Effect (EMF) in the alloys of this segment is based on the thermoelastic
transformation of the martensite, with an internal rearrangement of the alloy crystals occurring,
resulting in a shape recovery capacity between 4 and 8% of its original dimension. These unique
properties of LMF represent significant advantages for applications in various products; however,
one of the biggest problems is still related to mechanical forming and machining difficulties. In this
way, welding can be an alternative for obtaining parts with more complex geometries. Bearing in
mind that the welding of LMF is somewhat peculiar, this review article aims to seek a broad
understanding of the welding processes of these alloys and report their positive and negative points,
analyzing the phase transformation temperature, effects, properties and microstructures of the weld
obtained by each process, as well as the formation of BMIs, which are impact factors in choosing the
best process. A special look was given to laser welding due to its advantages such as better process
control, high density, low heat input, reproducibility, low heat affected zone and monochromatic
nature, essential characteristics for a satisfactory result.
