Abstract: The ar cle presents an exploratory study of the evolu on of demography and
the already iden fied impacts of the COVID pandemic on demography in the world and in
Brazil. The ar cle aimed to iden fy the effects of the COVID pandemic on demographics,
and the results indicate a drop in the birth rate, an accelera on of popula on aging, and
an increase in excess deaths. It was not possible to iden fy an immediate drop in the total
popula on or iden fy quan ta ve trends. The introduc on takes up the importance of
the topic for the development of public policies; then, aspects of demography as a social
phenomenon are addressed, and an a empt is made to evaluate, at the global, na onal
and regional levels, the evolu on of the birth rate and life expectancy, associa ng, in
the course of the document, the already mapped effects of COVID on the desire to have
children, on the birth rate, and on the death rate.
