Welcome!
In order to ensure a dynamic learning process, this book works as
guidance and complementary tool to improve the English language
acquisition.

Both culture and identity are deeply associated to the language. Thus,
learning how to use the foreign language to communicate actively is
more important than learning how to use rules.

Through this book, it becomes easier to develop a cultural and

meaningful leaning that enriches students’ perception concerning
different life perspectives, beliefs and habits of other cultures as we
value our own.

Throughout twelve units, this book aims to provide students critical

reflection and debates, giving them the chance to raise their knowledge
individually and collectively while performing dynamic and ludic
activities that will guide them to achieve the necessary competences
of levels B1 and B2, according to the Common European Framework.
KNOWLEDGE
AND SKILLS

The Common European Framework of Reference: Learning, Teach-

ing, Assessment (CEF) is a system that compares language levels
for teaching and testing languages in Europe and works as a guid-
ance for all over the world. It aims to describe the knowledge and
skills students are required to master according to each level.

In the Intermediate Level, students are capable of:

• Understanding the main points of clear and familiar matters

about work, school, leisure, etc.

• Describing experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambi-

tions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and
plans.

• Producing clear texts on a wide range of subjects and explain-

ing a viewpoint giving the advantages and disadvantages of an
issue.

7. If you think you know everything about gossip, get to

couldn’t keep a secret.

STUDENT'S BOOK 27
Rebecca is a beautiful, intelligent, friendly and funny young lady. On the other hand, like any
other person in the world, she has a shortcoming. She is a babbler.

Although no one could ever understand her motivation to gossip, she is a beloved person
among her co-workers, so people watch what they say when she is around, especially after
some “innocent comments” she made that resulted in divorce, friendship break, job dismissal
and so on. You might be asking yourself why people keep hanging out with her. Right? Firstly,
because she makes it clear for everybody she has loose lips; she does not make it a secret.
Secondly, she never twists stories, she tells the truth. Finally, she gives every story such a
special sense of humor that makes the worst things seem something pure and naïve.

Once, there was a tattle going on in the office about Rebecca and her manager. The story took
greater proportions.

Here follows the lines of the rumors.

“You know, Rebecca is travelling to Canada with our

boss next week”.

her to improve her skills”.

The company director started an investigation and found that Rebecca’s manager called her
for a meeting and told her that pretty soon they are opening a new office in Canada and some
employees will be transferred to that office. Then, he would like to know how good her French
is because he is going to recommend her and some other people from his team to work in
Canada. On her non-stop chatty impulse, she talked to a co-worker too soon and the story
got a too much different course.

8. Answer the questions about the text:

a) Why do people like Rebecca?

b) Do you believe that’s the real reason they like her?

c) How would you classify Rebecca? Honest or gossipy? Why?

d) Do you think the rumors that were going on in the company were Rebecca’s, Rebecca’s
boss or Rebecca’s co-workers fault? Justify your opinion.
