Here’s how long you can work before your brain (1)shuts down
I’m having a hard time starting this article. According to research out of the University of
Melbourne, that might be because I’m middle-aged and work too much. Economists determined
that burning the midnight oil makes you, well, dumber.” Our study highlights that too much
work can have adverse effects on cognitive functioning,” they conclude. Tell us something
we didn’t know. Who hasn’t, at the end of a seemingly endless workweek, found themselves
staring blankly at their computer screen or into space unable to remember what they had for
2
lunch, let alone form a coherent thought about the task at hand?
For some employees, of course – the average resident (2) physician or, these days, that “(3)
gig economy” worker who makes ends meet by banging away at multiple projects – long
hours are a fact of modern working life. And there’s a cost. Medical researchers have shown
Inglês
that working too much can affect employees’ physical and mental health.
So how much is too much? For people age 40 and older, working up to roughly 25 hours
per week boosts memory, the ability to quickly process information and other aspects of
cognitive function, according to the study, which drew on a longitudinal survey that tracks
the well-being of 6,000 Australians. Beyond 25 hours a week, the middle-aged brain doesn’t
work as well, the study indicates, noting that the findings apply to both men and women.

A wave of anger is sweeping the cities of the world.
The protests have many different origins. In Brazil people rose up against bus fares, in Turkey
against a building project. Indonesians have rejected higher fuel prices. In the euro zone they
march against austerity, and the Arab spring has become a permanent protest against pretty
much everything.
Yet just as in 1848, 1968 and 1989, when people also found a collective voice, the demonstrators
have much in common. In one country after another, protesters have risen up with bewildering
speed. They tend to be ordinary, middle class people, not lobbies with lists of demands. Their
mix of revelry and rage condemns the corruption, inefficiency and arrogance of the folk in
charge.
Nobody can know how 2013 will change the world – if at all. In 1989 the Soviet empire
teetered and fell. But Marx’s belief that 1848 was the first wave of a proletarian revolution
was confounded by decades of flourishing capitalism and 1968 did more to change sex than
politics. Even now, though, the inchoate significance of 2013 is discernible. And for politicians
who want to peddle the same old stuff, news is not good.
The Economist, June 29, 2013. Adaptado.

To live the longest and healthiest life possible, get smarter. Institute for Health Metrics and
Evaluation (IHME) data show that past a certain threshold, health and wealth are just weakly
correlated. However, overall health is closely tied to how many years people spend in school.
Mexico, for instance, has a fifth the per capita gross domestic product (GDP) of the United
States, but, for women, more than 50 percent of the latter’s schooling.
In line with the trend, Mexico’s female adult mortality rate is only narrowly higher. Vietnam
and Yemen have roughly equivalent per capita GDP. Yet Vietnamese women average 6.3
more years in school and are half as likely to die between the ages of 15 and 60. “Economic
growth is also significantly associated with child mortality reductions, but the magnitude of
the association is much smaller than that of increased education,” comments Emmanuela
Gakidou, IHME’s director of education and training. “One year of schooling gives you about
10 percent lower mortality rates, whereas with a 10 percent increase in GDP, your mortality
rate would go down only by 1 to 2 percent.”
Discover, May 31, 2013. Adaptado.
3. O argumento central do texto é o de que níveis mais altos de escolaridade estão diretamente
relacionados a
a) índices mais baixos de mortalidade.
b) crescimento econômico acentuado.
c) mais empregos para as mulheres.
d) menores taxas de natalidade.
e) melhorias nos serviços de saúde.

Inglês
Universities these days are working hard to improve their sustainability credentials, with efforts
that include wind power, organic food and competitions to save energy. They are also adding
courses related to sustainability and energy. But which university is the greenest?
Several ranking systems have emerged to offer their take. The Princeton Review recently came
out with its second annual green ratings. Fifteen colleges earned the highest possible score —
including Harvard, Yale and the University of California, Berkeley.
Another group, the Sustainable Endowment Institute’s GreenReportCard.org, rates colleges on
several different areas of green compliance, such as recycling, student involvement and green
building. Its top grade for overall excellence, an A-, was earned by 15 schools.

When I saw him, I had just seen his sister. (Quando o vi, eu tinha acabado de ver sua irmã.)
3. Com os advérbios already, when, by the time, never, ever, before, after, para enfatizar a ideia
de que a ação estava totalmente acabada:
He had already decided not to go. (Ele já tinha decidido não ir.)
By the time the police arrived, the thief had already escaped.

Malala Yousafzai, the youngest winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, celebrated her 18th birthday
in Lebanon on Sunday by opening a school for Syrian refugee girls and called on world leaders
to invest in “books not bullets”. Malala became a symbol of defiance after she was shot on
a school bus in Pakistan in 2012 by the Taliban for advocating girls’ rights to education. She
continued campaigning and won the Nobel in 2014.
“I decided to be in Lebanon because I believe that the voices of the Syrian refugees need to be
heard and they have been ignored for so long,” Malala told Reuters in a schoolroom decorated
with drawings of butterflies. The Malala Fund, a non-profit organization that supports local
education projects, provided most of the funding for the school, set up by Lebanon’s Kayany
29
Foundation in the Bekaa Valley, close to the Syrian border. The Kayany Foundation, established
by Syrian Nora Joumblatt in response to Syria’s refugee crisis, has already completed three
other new schools to give free education to Syrian children in Lebanon. The Malala school can
welcome up to 200 girls aged 14 to 18.
“Today on my first day as an adult, on behalf of the world’s children, I demand of leaders we
must invest in books instead of bullets,” Malala said in a speech. Lebanon is home to at least 1.2
million of the 4 million refugees that have fled Syria’s war to neighboring countries. There are
about 500,000 Syrian school-age children in Lebanon, but only a fifth are in formal education.
“We are in danger of losing generations of young
Syrian girls due to the lack of education,” Joumblatt said in a speech at the opening of the
school. “Desperate and displaced Syrians are increasingly seeing early marriage as a way to
secure the social and financial future of their daughters. We need to provide an alternative:
Keep young girls in school instead of being pressured into wedlock.”
Lebanon, which allows informal settlements on land rented by refugees, says it can no longer
cope with the influx from Syria’s four-year conflict. More than one in four people living in
Lebanon is a refugee. The United Nations says the number of Syrian refugees in neighboring
countries is expected to reach 4.27 million by the end of the year. “In Lebanon as well as in
Jordan, an increasing number of refugees are being turned back at the border,” Malala said.
“This is inhuman and this is shameful.”
Her father Ziauddin said he was proud she was carrying on her activism into adulthood. “This
is the mission we have taken for the last 8-9 years. A small moment for the education of girls in
Swat Valley: it is spreading now all over the world,” he said.
