2.INTRODUÇÃO
A língua inglesa teve sua origem nos invasores germânicos que chegaram às
Ilhas Britânicas no século V. Esses invasores trouxeram o idioma anglo-saxão,
que se misturou com outras línguas existentes na região, resultando no inglês
médio. Durante o século XVI, ocorreram várias transformações na língua com
influências do renascimento, reforma e contatos coloniais. Isso levou ao
desenvolvimento do inglês moderno, que se tornou uma língua globalmente
dominante devido ao poder colonial britânico e à influência dos Estados
Unidos. Atualmente, o inglês é amplamente utilizado para comunicação global,
negócios, ciência e tecnologia.

4.ORIGEM DA LÍNGUA INGLÊSA
The English language originates from the Germanic languages spoken by the
Anglo-Saxon tribes in the region of England around the 5th century. These
tribes migrated from continental Europe to the British Isles and brought their
ancestral language.
Over the following centuries, Old English (or Anglo-Saxon) evolved and was
influenced by other languages, mainly Latin and French, due to the Viking and
Norman invasions. However, modern English began to form around the 16th
and 17th centuries, during the Renaissance, with the standardization and
expansion of the language throughout the British colonies.
With the growth of the British Empire from the 18th century onwards, English
spread across the world, becoming a globally important language for
commerce, science, politics and culture. Today, it is the most spoken language
in the world.

4.1 OLD ENGLISH
Old English, also known as Anglo-Saxon, was the earliest form of the English
language spoken between the 5th and 11th centuries. It evolved from the
Germanic languages brought by the Anglo-Saxon tribes who migrated to
England from what is now Germany and Denmark.
Old English was heavily influenced by the languages of the Celtic inhabitants of
Britain, as well as by Latin due to the presence of the Roman Empire. It had a
complex grammatical structure with inflections for nouns, verbs, and adjectives,
and featured a rich vocabulary.
Some famous literary works written in Old English include Beowulf, na epic
poem, and the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, a collection of historical records.
However, after the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, the English language
underwent significant changes due to the influence of the French-speaking
Normans.
The transition from Old English to Middle English marked a shift in vocabulary,
grammar, and pronunciation. Old English gradually transformed into Middle
English between the 11th and 15th centuries. This period saw the development
of the Chancery Standard, which became the basis for Modern English

4.2 MIDDLE ENGLISH

Middle English is the period of the English language that spanned from the 11th
to the 15th centuries, following the Old English period. It emerged after the
Norman Conquest of England in 1066 when the French-speaking Normans
established their rule. Middle English was a transitional phase between Old
English and Modern English.
During this period, the English language underwent significant changes in
vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. There was a merging of the Anglo-
Saxon and Norman French languages. As a result, Middle English became a
mixture of Germanic and Romance influences, with a wide range of vocabulary
borrowing from Latin, French, and other languages.
One notable development in Middle English is the simplification of inflections
and the emergence of a more flexible word order. Nouns and adjectives lost
most of their case distinctions, and the use of prepositions became more
common. The verb system also underwent changes, with the loss of some verb
endings and the development of auxiliary verbs.
Geoffrey Chaucer, known as the Father of English Literature, wrote his famous
works, including “The Canterbury Tales,” in Middle English. Other notable
authors of this period include William Langland and the anonymous author of
“Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.”
By the end of the 15th century, Middle English gradually transitioned into Early
Modern English, marking the beginning ok of the period leading to the modern
form of the English language.

4.3 MODERN ENGLISH

Modern English refers to the period of English language history from around the
late 15th century to the present day. It is the form of English spoken and written
by native speakers today. Although there have been significant changes in
vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar over the centuries, modern English still
retains many features inherited from Middle English, such as its basic structure
and grammatical framework. This period saw the standardization of English
spelling and grammar, as well as the development of new words and phrases to
reflect the changing times and advancements in technology, science, and
culture. Today, modern English is spoken by hundreds of millions of people
worldwide and serves as a global lingua franca.

4.4 CURIOSITY
Na interesting fact about the origin of the English language is that it belongs to
the Germanic language family. It evolved from a common ancestor called Proto-
Germanic, spoken by Germanic tribes who inhabited northern Europe about
2,000 years ago.
During the Middle Ages, Old English was spoken in England before the Norman
invasion in 1066. After the Norman Conquest, English began to be spoken with
Norman French, which gave rise to the so-called Middle English, which was
spoken by approximately 300 years.
After Middle English came Modern English, which began to develop in the late
15th century and continued to evolve over the following centuries. Modern
English has been contained throughout the world due to British colonial power
and the influence of the United States.
Today, English is spoken as a first or second language by hundreds of millions
of people around the world. It is one of the most widely studied and used
languages for global communication, business, science, technology,
entertainment and much more.
