Underdogs é uma plataforma cultural sediada em
Lisboa, Portugal, que reúne uma galeria com dois
espaços expositivos, um programa de arte pública, a
produção de edições artísticas e o desenvolvimento de
projectos artísticos comissionados. Estabelecida em
2010 e consolidada na sua presente forma em 2013,
a Underdogs trabalha com um elenco diversificado de
artistas portugueses e internacionais ligados ao universo
da arte contemporânea de inspiração urbana, fomentando
o desenvolvimento de relações de proximidade entre
criadores, o público e a cidade com vista a promover a arte
como uma experiência quotidiana.
Underdogs is a cultural platform based in Lisbon, Portugal
that encompasses a gallery with two exhibition areas, a
public art programme, the production of artist editions,
and the development of commissioned art projects.
Established in 2010 and consolidated in its present form
in 2013, Underdogs works with a diversified roster of
Portuguese and international artists connected with the
urban-inspired contemporary art universe, fostering the
development of close relationships between creators, the
public, and the city with the aim of promoting art as an
everyday experience.

O que é, para ti, o mais importante na arte: a linha ou a cor?
O desenho pode ser a expressão mais genuína de um artista:
não há máscaras, nem disfarces, nem obstáculos entre o
artista e o seu pincel. É onde os criadores se encontram mais
vulneráveis e expostos.
“Se dominarmos um pouco o desenho, todo o resto será
possível”, declarou o artista suíço Alberto Giacometti
(1901–1966), o mestre das linhas infinitas no século XX.
As cores, por outro lado, podem chamar a atenção antes
mesmo de percebermos o conteúdo de uma imagem. Estas
são responsáveis por conferir estado de espírito, atmosfera,
profundidade e luz às obras de arte.“A cor é uma das
melhores coisas no mundo que faz com que, para mim, a vida
valha a pena ser vivida”, defendeu a célebre artista norte-
americana Georgia O’Keeffe (1887–1986).
Embora custe a acreditar, uma das disputas mais
extraordinárias na história da arte ocidental foi exatamente
sobre a supremacia da cor por oposição à linha na pintura.
A chamada “Querelle du coloris” [Disputa sobre a cor], que
ocorreu na década de 1670, levou a Academia Real de Pintura
e Escultura francesa, em Paris, a embarcar numa feroz
disputa teórica. Os pintores dividiram-se entre rubénistes
(inclinados para as obras de Peter Paul Rubens) e poussinistes
(que preferiam as obras de Nicolas Poussin). O primeiro
grupo acreditava que a cor era superior porque era mais fiel
à natureza. Segundo estes, o desenho agradava apenas a
alguns especialistas, enquanto a cor refletia emoções e podia
ser apreciada por todos. O segundo grupo, que considerava a
forma como sendo mais importante, defendia o pensamento
antes da ação. Para eles, o uso de linhas para representar a
forma era a competência essencial da pintura, enquanto a
cor era meramente decorativa. Uma disputa do século XVII
que efetivamente ensandeceu os estudiosos.
Naquela época, as academias eram programas de formação
dogmática, que proporcionavam aos artistas um local onde
expor regularmente. Segundo o historiador de arte Michael
Driskel,“o desenvolvimento da teoria académica assentou
na noção de que a pintura era uma ‘disciplina’ governada
por regras que poderiam ser definidas e ensinadas”. Hoje
em dia, a arte pode ser vista e criada em todo o lado. A
descentralização e o não-hierárquico estão na ordem do dia.
Esta exposição revisita a disputa em relação aos tempos
atuais. A Controversial Affair reúne obras de dez artistas
urbanos contemporâneos que lidam com diversas formas
What is, for you, the most important in art: line or colour?
Drawing could be the most genuine expression of an artist:
there are no masks, no disguises, no obstacles between
the artist and his brush. It is where creators are the most
vulnerable and exposed.“If we master a bit of drawing,
everything else is possible,” said the Swiss artist Alberto
Giacometti (1901–1966), the master of endless lines in the
20th century. Colours, on the other hand, may catch the eye
even before one realises the content of an image. They are
responsible for bringing mood, atmosphere, depth, and light
to artworks.“Colour is one of the great things in the world
that makes life worth living to me,” defended the celebrated
American artist Georgia O’Keeffe (1887–1986).
Believe it or not, one of the most remarkable quarrels in
Western art history was exactly about the supremacy of
colour versus line in painting. The so-called Querelle du
coloris [Dispute on colour] which took place in the 1670s, led
the French Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, in
Paris, to embark on a fierce theoretical dispute. Painters split
into the Rubénistes (inclined towards the works of Peter Paul
Rubens) and the Poussinistes (who were partial to the works
of Nicolas Poussin). The first group believed that colour was
superior as it was more true to nature. According to them,
drawing appealed only to a few experts whereas colour
reflected emotions and could be enjoyed by everyone. The
second group, which considered form to be more valuable,
defended thinking before acting. To them, the use of lines
to depict form was the essential skill of painting, and colour
was purely decorative. A 17th century dispute that actually
drove scholars mad.
In those days, academies were dogmatic training
programmes that provided artists with a regular exhibition
venue. According to art historian Michael Driskel,“the
development of academic theory was predicated on the
notion that painting was a ‘discipline’ governed by rules that
could be defined and taught.” Today, art is everywhere to be
seen and created. Decentralisation and nonhierarchical are
the order of the day.
This exhibition revisits the quarrel in relation to
contemporary times. A Controversial Affair gathers works
by ten contemporary urban artists who deal with various
expanded forms of painting, and are influenced daily by the
harmony and confrontation of line and colour.

artistas iniciou a sua prática nas ruas do mundo, escrevendo
os seus nomes nas paredes. A linha é essencial na arte do
graffiti, uma assinatura rápida inscrita na paisagem. Com
o seu desenvolvimento, a cor começou a ser acrescentada,
tornando-se fundamental, particularmente no graffiti em
comboios, evoluindo para a criação de murais, onde a linha e
a cor começaram a combinar-se.
Em 1678, a cor venceu. A emoção, e não a racionalidade,
estava na ordem do dia. Para o mundo ocidental, isto
significou que a pintura passou a ser mais acessível a
pessoas fora da Academia, um primeiro e importante passo
para abertura do universo da arte. Hoje, a acessibilidade
do mundo da arte contemporânea é um outro assunto
polémico. Uma discussão que é parte integrante da arte

landscape. With its development, colour started being added,
becoming crucial, notably on train graffiti, evolving into the
creation of murals, where line and colour started blending.
In 1678, colour won. Emotion, and not rationality, was
the order of the day. To the Western world, it meant that
painting started to be more accessible to people outside the
Academy, an important first step towards the openness of
the art world. Today, the accessibility of the contemporary
art world is another controversial affair. A discussion that is
an integral part of urban art.

ANDRÉ SARAIVA
Também conhecido como Monsieur André e Monsieur A, André
Saraiva (n. 1971) é um artista de ascendência portuguesa que
nasceu na Suécia e cresceu em Paris, onde começou o seu
percurso na cena do graffiti ilegal aos 13 anos. Na década de 1990,
querendo distanciar-se das limitações do graffiti mais tradicional,
desenvolveu o seu original e icónico personagem Mr A, que foi
pintando pelas ruas da cidade em interacção poética e divertida
com o espaço público e os transeuntes. Desde então, o artista já
assinou inúmeras intervenções em múltiplas cidades à volta do
mundo, sendo visto como um dos pais da cena da arte urbana
contemporânea. Tem exposto igualmente o seu trabalho em
galerias e instituições à volta do mundo, e a sua obra encontra-se
representada em várias colecções de renome. Também já realizou
vários filmes e videoclipes e trabalhou como director criativo e
empresário de clubes, hotéis e restaurantes em diversos países.

FELIPE PANTONE
Felipe Pantone é um artista argentino-espanhol que começou
a fazer graffiti aos 12 anos de idade. Estudou Belas Artes em
Valência (Espanha), onde hoje tem o seu estúdio, e o seu trabalho
lida com dinamismo, transformação, a revolução digital e temas
relacionados com a actualidade. As obras de Felipe Pantone
invocam um espírito que se assemelha a uma colisão entre um
passado analógico e um futuro digitalizado, onde seres humanos
e máquinas inevitavelmente falharão em conjunto, num prisma de
gradientes de néon, formas geométricas, padrões ópticos e grades
irregulares. Pantone é um produto da era tecnológica em que as
crianças desvendavam os mistérios da vida através da Internet.
Como resultado deste prolongado tempo de ecrã, explora a
forma como o deslocamento do espectro de luz afecta a cor e a
repetição. Para Pantone, o seu trabalho é uma meditação sobre
as formas como consumimos informações visuais. Inspirado por
artistas cinéticos como Victor Vasarely e Carlos Cruz-Diez - que
ambos trabalharam com movimento – a sua arte contemporânea
produz a sensação de vibração à medida que a posição do
espectador muda em relação à obra. Pantone trabalha com vários
softwares que traduz para produzir frescos, murais, pinturas e

Also known as Monsieur André and Monsieur A, André Saraiva (b.
1971) is an artist of Portuguese descent who was born in Sweden
and grew up in Paris, where he started his path in the illegal graffiti
scene at the age of 13. In the 1990s, wanting to distance himself
from the limitations of the more traditional graffiti he developed
his original and iconic character Mr A, which he began painting
throughout the city in poetic and joyful interaction with the public
space and passers-by. Since then, the artist has signed countless
interventions in multiple cities around the world, being regarded
as one of the fathers of the contemporary urban art scene. He has
also been exhibiting his work in galleries and institutions around
the world and his oeuvre is represented in various renowned
collections. He has also directed several films and music videos
and worked as creative director and owner of clubs, hotels and
restaurants in diverse countries.
FAILE is the Brooklyn-based artistic collaboration between Patrick
McNeil and Patrick Miller. Since its inception in 1999, FAILE has
been known for a wide-ranging multimedia practice recognizable
for its explorations of duality through a fragmented style of
appropriation and collage.
Felipe Pantone is an Argentinian-Spanish artist. He started doing
graffiti at the age of 12. He graduated with a Fine Art degree in
Valencia (Spain) where his studio is based. Pantone’s work deals
with dynamism, transformation, digital revolution, and themes
related to the present times. Felipe Pantone evokes a spirit in
his work that feels like a collision between an analog past and a
digitized future, where human beings and machines will inevitably
glitch alongside one another in a prism of neon gradients,
geometric shapes, optical patterns, and jagged grids. Based in
Spain, Pantone is a byproduct of the technological age when kids
unlocked life’s mysteries through the Internet. As a result of this
prolonged screen time, he explores how the displacement of the
light spectrum impacts color and repetition. For Pantone, his art is
a meditation on the ways we consume visual information. Drawing
inspiration from kinetic artists like Victor Vasarely and Carlos Cruz-
Diez — who both worked with movement) — his contemporary
work produces the sensation of vibration as the viewer’s position
changes in relation to the work. Pantone works on various software
and then translates into frescoes, murals, paintings, and sculptures

JASON REVOK
Totalmente autodidacta, Jason REVOK é conhecido por desafiar
limites criativos que originaram nas ruas. Embora o seu percurso
se tenha iniciado com o graffiti, o artista passou a última década
focado no seu trabalho de estúdio e na evolução de processos e
conceitos. Recusando-se a ser limitado pelo seu reconhecimento
inicial, REVOK permite que apenas alguns elementos da cultura
do graffiti transitem para seu trabalho contemporâneo - materiais
modestos e ferramentas industriais, engenhosidade, o seu nome
- mas a sua propensão para o minimalismo e abstracção tornou-
se a força motriz da sua prática artística. Examinando a questão
da autoria do início ao fim, REVOK desenvolveu ferramentas
sistemáticas, mas imperfeitas, para levar a cabo a sua visão e criou
vários corpos de trabalho inconfundíveis. A sua geometria ousada
e equilibrada é acentuada pela personalidade e imperfeição do
toque humano. REVOK apresentou o seu trabalho no Museu de
Arte Contemporânea de Detroit, no Museu de Arte da Califórnia
em Los Angeles e no Museu de Arte da Califórnia em Pasadena,
entre outros. Tem integrado exposições em galerias e projectos

JONONE
JonOne (n. 1963) é um artista americano de origem dominicana
que cresceu no Harlem, Nova Iorque, e mudou-se para Paris
em 1987. Iniciou o seu percurso no graffiti, tendo-se depois
tornado um artista autodidacta com foco na pintura. Mesclando
influências da sua experiência de vida com a cultura urbana
e a pintura moderna (incluindo o expressionismo abstracto e
pintores como Jackson Pollock ou Jean Dubuffet), desenvolveu
uma linguagem própria colorida e abstracta caracterizada por
pinceladas dinâmicas, gotas e padrões que primeiro ensaiou na
arquitectura e infraestrutura da cidade. Conhecido por ser um
freestyler, o artista tem vindo a expor as suas obras em tela em
instituições artísticas e galerias à volta do mundo com enorme
reconhecimento por parte da crítica. Hoje em dia continua a
desenvolver trabalho tanto dentro como fora de portas e a dividir
o seu tempo entre Nova Iorque e Paris.

MAYA HAYUK
Maya Hayuk é uma artista ucraniana e americana com uma
vasta experiência numa variedade de formas de arte generativa
e práticas sociais. Hayuk entrelaça informações visuais do seu
meio envolvente imediato em abstracções elaboradas e pictóricas,
criando assim uma mistura envolvente de referências da
cultura popular e práticas avançadas de pintura. Os seus murais
improvisados em grande escala reflectem a obsessão da artista
pela simetria,“perfeita imperfeição” e espaço exterior/interno.
As suas obras procuram expandir a consciência e percepção
para encontrar padrões e interligações. O resultado é a junção

Entirely self-taught, Jason REVOK is known for pushing creative
boundaries that began in the street. Although his story begins
with graffiti, the artist has spent the last decade focusing on his
studio practice and the evolution of process and concept. Refusing
to be limited by his early recognition, REVOK allows only certain
elements from graffiti culture to transition to his contemporary
work — modest materials and industrial tools, ingenuity, his
name — but his proclivity towards minimalism and post-painterly
abstraction has become the driving force behind his practice.
Examining the question of authorship from start to finish, REVOK
has developed systematic yet imperfect tools to carry out his vision
and has created a number of unmistakable bodies of work. His bold,
balanced geometry is heightened by the personal and imperfect
slight of the human hand. REVOK has exhibited in the Museum
of Contemporary art, Detroit, the Museum of California Art Los
Angeles and the Pasadena Museum of California Art. He has shown
widely in galleries and special projects in New York, Los Angeles,
Detroit, and Dubai; and is included in important private collections
worldwide. Jason REVOK lives and works in Detroit, Michigan, USA.
JonOne (b. 1963) is an American artist of Dominican origin who
grew up in Harlem, New York and moved to Paris in 1987. He began
his path as a graffiti writer and then became a self-taught artist,
focused on painting. Blending influences from his life experience
with urban culture and modern painting (including abstract
expressionism and artists such as Jackson Pollock or Jean Dubuffet)
he developed a signature colourful abstract style characterised
by dynamic brushstrokes, drips, and patterns which he first tried
out on the architecture and infrastructure of the city. Known as a
freestyler, he has been exhibiting his canvas-based work in various
art institutions and galleries around the world to critical acclaim.
He currently continues to produce work both indoors and outdoors
and divide his time between New York and Paris.
Maya Hayuk is a Ukrainian-American artist with an extensive
background in a wide range of generative art and social
practices. Hayuk weaves visual information from her immediate
surroundings into elaborate, painterly abstractions, thus creating
an engaging mix of referents from popular culture and advanced
painting practices alike. Her large-scale, improvised murals speak
to the artist’s obsession with symmetry,“perfect imperfection” and
outer/ inner space. Her works look to expanding consciousness
and perception to find patterns and interconnectivity. Ultimately,
the traditional and the contemporary blend into new harmonic,
dissonant, optimistic, experimental compositions. Hayuk considers

OKUDA SAN MIGUEL
Okuda San Miguel (n. 1980) vive e trabalha em Madrid. A sua
linguagem iconográfica única, com estruturas geométricas e
padrões multicolores, juntamente com a sua participação activa
em projectos de cariz social, têm levado ao seu reconhecimento
mundial. Em 2015, Okuda completou Kaos Temple, um marco
importante da sua carreira em que transformou uma igreja
convertida em parque de skate num espaço expositivo de arte
contemporânea. Desde então, tem sido procurado por instituições
culturais e marcas pelo mundo fora para trabalhar em projectos
públicos de grande escala. O corpo de trabalho de Okuda inclui
intervenções em mural e escultura e exposições em galerias
em quatro continentes. Algumas distinções incluem ter sido o
primeiro artista contemporâneo a ser escolhido para o prestigiado
festival Falles em Valência, uma série de esculturas para o Boston
Seaport e a sua participação no projecto Titanes, desenhado
para promover a inclusão social através da arte. Também produz
trabalho em tela, incorporando elementos de bordado e colagem.

PichiAvo é um duo de artistas espanhóis (Pichi & Avo),
reconhecidos pela sua aptidão para estabelecer relações
entre arte, arquitectura, escultura, espaço e contextos sociais,
adoptando um enfoque altamente atraente e performativo,
rotundo no seu discurso artístico e plenamente inovador nas
suas fusões. Trabalhando juntos desde 2007, os dois artistas de
Valência rejeitam o egocentrismo do graffiti tradicional de modo

SAINER
O artista polaco Sainer (n. 1988) começou o seu percurso na cena
do graffiti ilegal durante a sua adolescência, tendo posteriormente
her studio painting and mural practices as both inversely relational
and symbiotic.
Okuda San Miguel (b. 1980) lives and Works in Madrid. His unique
iconographic language, with its geometric structures and multi-
coloured patterns, along with his active participation in major
social projects, has made him an internationally recognized artist.
In 2015, Okuda completed Kaos Temple, a highlight of his career
in which he transformed a church converted into a skate park
into a showcase for contemporary art. Since then, he has been
sought out by cultural institutions and brands across the world to
work on large-scale public projects. Okuda’s body of work includes
mural and sculptural interventions and gallery exhibitions on four
continents. Some distinctions include being the first contemporary
artist to be chosen for Valencia’s prestigious Falles festival, a
series of sculptures for Boston Seaport and his participation in
the Titanes project, designed to promote social inclusion through
art. He also produces work on canvas, incorporating elements of
embroidery and collage. His insatiable appetite for creation has
also led him to experiment with other formats, including sculpture,
photography and video. His creations mix colour and geometry
with organic shapes to create an evocative symbolism. Okuda’s
work can be classified as Pop Surrealism but maintains the essence
of its roots in the streets. Always seeking to inspire viewers, his
works raise universal issues while leaving their meaning open to
interpretation.
PichiAvo is a duo of Spanish artists (Pichi & Avo), recognised for
their ability to establish relationships between art, architecture,
sculpture, space, and social contexts, adopting a highly attractive
and performative focus, categorical in its artistic discourse and
fully innovative in its fusions. Working together since 2007,
the two artists from Valencia reject the self-centredness of
traditional graffiti in order to create a single individual oeuvre
that deconstructs and blends motifs from classical art and
contemporary urban art. Gifted with an innovative language, their
practice conveys a poetics born of the artistic formalism of the
street, transferring fragments of the wall to the canvas and vice-
versa, following a markedly personal and original vision.

ocasionais. Conhecido pelo traço exímio que exerce com enorme

criatividade única imbuída de visões oníricas onde pessoas e
lugares se encontram numa mistura de realismo pictórico com
um toque surreal.“Crossroads”, o enorme mural que produziu em
Lisboa para a Underdogs, em 2015, é exemplo disso, um encontro

A artista americana Caledonia Curry (n. 1977) tem vindo a
produzir trabalho sob o nome de Swoon desde 1999. Tornou-
se amplamente conhecida como a primeira mulher a ganhar
reconhecimento alargado no mundo predominantemente
masculino da street art. Começou a apresentar trabalho nas
ruas de Nova Iorque enquanto estudava no Pratt Institute of
Art, colando os seus retratos em papel nas fachadas de edifícios
com o objectivo de tornar a arte e o espaço público da cidade
mais acessíveis. A sua obra comporta em si uma sinceridade,
tratando o belo enquanto sublime mesmo quando explora o
lado mais sombrio dos seus sujeitos. O seu trabalho tornou-
se conhecido por casar o fantástico e o mundano, juntando
frequentemente a isto elementos de fábulas e mitos, assim
como um motivo recorrente do sagrado feminino. Durante a
sua vida tem estado envolvida em vários projectos de natureza
social e criou a Heliotrope Foundation, uma organização sem
fins lucrativos, de modo a apoiar estes empreendimentos. A sua
obra pode ser vista frequentemente em ruas pelo mundo fora,

involved in various socially committed projects and created the
non-profit Heliotrope Foundation to support these ventures. Her
work can be frequently seen in streets worldwide and has also been
showcased in renowned art institutions, including the Museum
of Modern Art (New York), the Institute of Contemporary Art
(Boston), Tate Modern (London), and the São Paulo Museum of Art.
Most recently, she has begun using film animation to explore the
boundaries of visual storytelling.
