Abstract
There is a high deficit of Physics teachers working in high schools, and one
of the reasons for this is that there is little interest in remaining in the teaching career.
Being a Physics teacher implies countless challenges, ranging from professional
practice to public policies and social relations. Based on this, the objective of this
research is to identify which motivational elements contribute to the permanence and
engagement of Physics graduate teachers in the profession. To this end, the Self-
Determination Theory was chosen as a support for the investigation. The research
participants were high school teachers who graduated from a Brazilian federal
university located in Minas Gerais. The analysis was made from a questionnaire
applied to the teachers, highlighting the motivational aspects listed by the educators
from the point of view of the theoretical perspective. The elements that emerge as
favorable to staying in the profession are permanent training and professional
development, good teacher-student relationship, personal satisfaction, feedback and
accumulated professional experience.
