Phoneme Addition simply means we
are going to add a sound to our
words.
Teaching:
For example, I might say BELL but ask my child to

add a /t/ (sound, not letter) to the end to make
the word BELT.
To practice phoneme addition:
• Say a word.
• Have your child repeat the word.
• Now ask your child to add a sound (of your
choice) to the word.

• Repeat the word if necessary.
• Do this with your child the first couple
times.
• Play this game while your child is
playing.
• Use names of toys or animals that your
child likes.

Opposite of Phoneme Addition,
this time we are going to take
away a sound or a syllable!
Teaching:
To practice phoneme/syllable deletion:

• Say a word.
• Have your child repeat the word.
• Now ask your child to say that word again, but
don’t say (sound or syllable of your choice).
For example, have your child say CHAIR, and ask

them to say it again but don’t say /ch/.
The answer would be AIR.

Tips:
• Model this as needed.
• Repeat the sounds of the word as needed.
• When first starting this, emphasizing the sound
that should stay can be helpful.
For example, if you are doing a word like robot,

and having your child take away the RO, then
emphasize BOT when you say the word.
• Use words from around the house.
• Use names of their favorite things.

outros 30-40%. E não sabemos quem eles são até que
mostrem a dificuldade.
