1. Introdução
Neste resumo está compilado parte do nosso conhecimento atual sobre motores. Buscamos
ser o mais claro possível nas explanações, para que um aprendiz ainda que sem nenhum contato
com motores, possa entender os aspectos básicos desta máquina térmica usada nos protótipos.
Inicialmente fazemos a exposição dos componentes do motor, descrevendo a importância e a
dinâmica de cada um no funcionamento do motor, e propomos uma discussão que certamente não
deve se restringir ao que foi abordado nesta apostila, enfatizando a importância do entendimento
dos mecanismos e da termodinâmica dos motores. Em seguida nos atemos aos motores Briggs &
Stratton 10HP, detalhando todos os procedimentos que devem ser adotados para manutenção e
outros detalhes corriqueiros na preparação do motor para o funcionamento e em especial para a
competição. Frisamos que a leitura desta apostila não substitui a leitura do manual do fabricante
nem dos livros indicados na bibliografia, e que os aspectos da regra da competição devem ser de
total conhecimento pelos que se responsabilizarem pelo motor.

2. Componentes Principais
2.1. Definições
Anéis do Pistão: usados para controlarem a pressão, controle do óleo e a lubrificação do pistão.
Possuem diversas formas, especificadas conforme a função que vai exercer: vedação, lubrificação
ou raspagem de óleo. O desgaste excessivo do anel de segmento que tem função de raspagem do
óleo pode provocar a entrada de óleo
Biela: um componente que conecta o pino de articulação e o pistão ao eixo da manivela e
transmite a força da combustão ao eixo da manivela do mancal.
Carburador: É um aparelho ou dispositivo, que a partir de um combustível líquido e do ar da
atmosfera, prepara e fornece para todos os regimes de trabalho do motor, uma mistura de fácil
queima.
Centrífugo: produz incrementos de rotação no motor para mantê-lo funcionando em baixa
rotação.

NOTA
Mesmo com a borboleta fechada ainda passa ar através de pequenos canais laterais. Quando
o motor está desligado por um tempo, fechamos a borboleta para que a mistura fique rica (mais
combustível do que ar), e detone com mais facilidade. Conforme o motor vai esquentando a
borboleta vai sendo aberta para que a mistura se aproxime da estequiometria correta.
3.1 Conceito
O motor é uma máquina térmica cuja finalidade é transformar a energia armazenada nas
ligações químicas do combustível em trabalho de eixo. Como toda máquina térmica, o motor
apresenta baixo rendimento em função da limitação dos materiais utilizados, pois atualmente
não há materiais que suportem altas temperaturas com propriedades como condutividade
térmica e dilatação apropriadas. Conhecer a dinâmica dos motores ajuda a extrair o máximo de
sua eficiência.
NOTAS:
[1] Em apenas uma etapa (expansão) o motor produz trabalho, enquanto que as outras três
etapas são passivas. O volante ajuda a manter a inércia rotativa durante todo o ciclo, sem que
haja variação brusca da velocidade angular do eixo de saída do motor.

Em anexo a vista explodida do motor, disponibilizado pela Briggs&Stratton. Vale a pena ler
ainda o material disposto pela Briggs, que se encontram na biblioteca do projeto.
5.1. Retire o carburador. Folgue os dois parafusos da parte inferior do carburador, onde está
localizada a bóia de combustível. Limpe a bóia de combustível aplicando Micro-óleo nos
furos. Isto desobstruirá os caminhos por onde passam o combustível. Caso a bóia esteja
cheia de combustível quando for verificada, troque-a. Aplique Micro-óleo no giclê.
5.2. Retire o a proteção lateral onde está localizada a cordinha folgando os 3 parafusos.

5.6. Retire o cabeçote folgando os 5 parafusos, começando pelo parafuso central, localizado
entre as varetas. O pistão e as varetas ficarão expostos. As válvulas de admissão e escape
dever ser retiradas para limpeza, e para tal proceda da seguinte maneira: apóie uma porca
sob a primeira válvula, empurre a mola para baixo e libere a chaveta bipartida. Muito
cuidado para não perdê-la. Repita o procedimento para a outra válvula. Limpe as varetas,
os balancins e as válvulas com gasolina.

5.7. Após escorrer o óleo do motor, retire a tampa lateral. Cuidado com as engrenagens que
estão localizadas nesta tampa, pois não podem cair quando a tampa for retirada. Caso a
tampa não saia com facilidade, deve-se lixar um pouco o eixo e aplicar Micro-óleo. Retire o
comando de válvula e os tuxos, limpando-os com gasolina.

5.8. Para retirar o pistão folge os dois parafusos da biela. Existe uma chave especial na caixa
do motor para tal. Gire o virabrequim empurrando o pistão para baixo até que a biela seja
liberada. Empurre o pistão para cima até que seja retirado. Retire cuidadosamente os 3
anéis de segmento. Limpe a cabeça do pistão com descarbonizante e os anéis de segmento
com gasolina. Atenção na montagem: os anéis de segmento não devem ser trocados de
lugar e devem ser montados com a indicação para cima. Aplique Micro-óleo na camisa e no
pistão antes de posicionar o pistão no lugar de volta.Lembre-se que o pistão deve ser
colocado na posição onde a seta indicativa esteja voltada para o volante. Use a cinta de
anéis para comprimir os anéis de segmento no pistão, e apoiando sobre a base bata
levemente no pistão para que ele desça.

5.9. Retire o volante. Retire a porca que prende a corda. O volante tem encaixe cônico, logo
para tirá-lo coloque uma porca grande no virabrequim e bata. Isto folgará o volante. Em
seguida retire o virabrequim e limpe-o com gasolina. Nunca tente retirar o volante com o
pistão no lugar, pois isto forçará a biela.
5.10. O processo de limpeza foi concluído. Limpe as engrenagens da tampa lateral e
monte tudo em seu devido lugar, seguindo a seguinte ordem: virabrequim, pistão, biela,
tuxos, comando de válvula. Atenção na montagem da tampa lateral: a indicação na
engrenagem do comando de válvula deve coincidir com a indicação da engrenagem
localizada no eixo do virabrequim. Monte o cabeçote no bloco após recolocar os balancins

pistão deve estar posicionado no Ponto Morto Superior, no final da compressão e início da
explosão, quando o volante está passando pelo gerador de corrente.
5.12. Monte o carburador.
5.13. Coloque óleo no motor. O óleo utilizado pela equipe hoje é o SAE 20W-50.
NOTA
Fique atento no retorno do acelerador, pois o aperto do parafuso do acelerador não deve intervir
no retorno do mesmo. Limpe todos os mecanismos com um jato de Micro-óleo, para retirar a
sujeira que se instala na base. Isto também pode interferir no funcionamento dos mecanismos.
Regulagem do Governador: Regule a marcha lenta na borboleta do carburador. A faixa ideal para
a marcha lenta é 1800rpm ± 50. Regule a marcha alta na mola que obrigatoriamente deve esta
posicionada no furo 6, conforme indicação na tampa do governador. Aproximando do escape
aumenta a rotação, enquanto que no sentido da corta-fogo abaixa a rotação. Esta regulagem pode

ser realizada com o acelerador topado. A marcha alta é limitada pela regra da competição.
Atualmente está em 3800rpm±100, de modo que podemos usar algo em torno de 3850rpm. É
importante notar que uma vez regulada a marcha alta, toda vez que o acelerador topar dará a mesma
rotação.
a chaveta pode ter partido porque a contra-porca do volante não foi devidamente
apertada. Coloque o volante na posição correta, guiando-se pela posição da chaveta.
7. Troque o motor.
NOTA
Em nenhum caso, em situação real de prova a tampa lateral é aberta!
O amaciamento é um passo vital para determinação da vida útil do motor. Quando o motor
sai da fábrica não devem ser requeridas altas rotações instantaneamente, uma vez que as peças não
estão assentadas. Ignorar esta recomendação pode causar sérios problemas aos componentes do
motor, como microtrincas em engrenagens. O amaciamento deve ser realizado em bancada, sem
carga e em uma única etapa.
10. Perspectiva
Esperamos que os trabalhos desenvolvidos nos próximos anos complementem esta apostila, que
na sua primeira versão ainda encontra-se carente de muitas informações. Toda informação adicional
é bem-vinda.
