O T E A P - Test of English for Academic Purposes é o e x a m e d e proficiência e m inglês m a i s

r e c o m e n d a - s e procurar inferir o s e n t i d o d a p a l a v r a o u expressão a t r a v é s do contexto.
É importante ficar atento à inteligibilidade d a r e s p o s t a f o r n e c i d a , ou s e j a , a o terminar d e r e s p o n d e r

E s s e tipo d e q u e s t ã o n ã o t e m c o m o f o c o a análise d a c a p a c i d a d e de síntese e s i m a h a b i l i d a d e e m
c o m p r e e n d e r e r e p r o d u z i r u m d e t e r m i n a d o c o n t e ú d o d e u m i d i o m a p a r a outro i d i o m a . E m p e s q u i s a s e
t r a b a l h o s a c a d é m i c o s é bastante c o m u m a r e p r o d u ç ã o d e t r e c h o s p a r a citações diretas e c o m p r e e n s ã o
p o r m e n o r i z a d a d e p o n t o s específicos.

2.2.1 D i c a s T i p o g r á f i c a s
A s s i m c o m o n a o r a l i d a d e , n a l i n g u a g e m e s c r i t a a l g u n s s i n a i s s ã o utilizados para e x p r e s s a r
diversos s e n t i d o s d e s e j a d o s pelo autor. V e j a a l g u n s e x e m p l o s d e d i c a s tipográficas: !, @ , #, $, %, *, ? , :,
. , , " , itálico, negrito, s u b l i n h a d o , maiúscula. N a o r a l i d a d e u t i l i z a m o s o s g e s t o s , d a m o s d i c a s s o b r e n o s s a s
intenções c o m o s o l h o s , c o m a b o c a , c o m a e n t o n a ç ã o d a v o z etc. J á n a escrita, a s d i c a s d e v e m s e r
ciaras o suficiente p a r a q u e o leitor p e r c e b a o q u e o autor q u e r e x p l i c a r e q u e p o s s a inferir algo o u p r e d i z e r
um tópico, c o m o por e x e m p l o , através d e figuras, letras m a i ú s c u l a s , a s p a s , pontos d e e x c l a m a ç ã o , d o i s
pontos, p o n t o s d e i n t e r r o g a ç ã o , etc.
Tais d i c a s tipográficas p o d e m auxiliar bastante n a c o m p r e e n s ã o d e textos. P o r e x e m p l o , a p a l a v r a
'brown' ern inglês significa a c o r m a r r o m , m a s s e estiver e m m a i ú s c u l a (Brown) p r o v a v e l m e n t e s e refere
a um n o m e próprio; s e e s t i v e r e m m i n ú s c u l a , m a s entre a s p a s (the house is "brown') o autor p o d e e s t a r
sinalizando q u e a c o r n ã o é e x a t a m e n t e m a r r o m , o u q u e há a l g u m s e n t i d o dúbio ou implícito. E s s a s
a p a r e n t e m e n t e s i m p l e s alterações tipográficas p o d e m afetar significativamente a interpretação d e u m
texto ou d e p a r t e s d e l e .
U m leitor c o m u m s e d e p a r a c o m d i c a s tipográficas d e s d e q u e a p r e n d e u a ler e m s u a língua
materna e s e a c o s t u m o u tanto c o m e l a s q u e às v e z e s n e m a s p e r c e b e c o n s c i e n t e m e n t e , u m a v e z q u e
a interpretação d e s e u s significados é praticamente a u t o m á t i c a . N o entanto, é muito c o m u m q u e e s s e
m e s m o leitor d e i x e d e o b s e r v a r tais d i c a s q u a n d o lê e m u m a língua e s t r a n g e i r a . N e s s a n o v a língua, e l e
presta tanta a t e n ç ã o a o significado d e p a l a v r a s , v e r b o s , p r o n o m e s , etc., q u e a s d i c a s tipográficas p o d e m
passar despercebidas.
2.2.2 Skimming
O p r o c e s s o d e skimming c o n s i s t e e m u m leitura rápida p a r a obter u m a i d e i a central d o text(
Você p o d e f a z e r u m skimming para d e s c o b r i r o p a d r ã o d e o r g a n i z a ç ã o do texto, o u para ter u m a idei
do tópico ou i d e i a central. 0 leitor g e r a l m e n t e utiliza a estratégia d e skimming quando quer decidir s
d e t e r m i n a d o texto v a l e a p e n a s e r lido: e l e ' p a s s a o s o l h o s ' p e l o texto, s e m s e p r e n d e r a p a l a v r a s
estruturas d e s c o n h e c i d a s , a fim de a p r e e n d e r a ideia central d o texto. S ó então o leitor irá d e c i d i r s e v;
ou não lê-lo integralmente.
E s t a técnica é utilizada t a m b é m p a r a c o m p r e e n d e r o s p o n t o s principais d e c a d a p a r á g r a f o d e ur
texto, p r o c u r a n d o c a p t a r a ideia principal d e c a d a u m d e l e s , s e m s e p r e o c u p a r c o m d e t a l h e s . O u s o d e s t
estratégia é c o m u m q u a n d o um leitor folheia um jornal o u revista, o l h a n d o para o s títulos d a s r e p o r t a g e n s
fotos e partes d o s textos s e m s e p r e n d e r a n e n h u m a s s u n t o e m e s p e c i a l .
E m u m a s i t u a ç ã o a c a d é m i c a , profissional o u d e avaliação, r e c o m e n d a - s e a utilização d e s t ;
estratégia a n t e s d a leitura p o r m e n o r i z a d a d o texto, u m a v e 7 q u e , a s s i m , o leitor s e familiariza c o m (
tópico, cria a l g u m a s predições s o b r e o texto e p a s s a a ter u m a v i s ã o d e conjunto m a i s c l a r a , o q u e pod<
auxiliar n a r e d u ç ã o d a a n s i e d a d e inicial. U m m e i o e f i c a z d e s e familiarizar c o m textos c o m p o s t o s d e v á r i o ;
parágrafos é 1er a primeira sentença d e c a d a parágrafo, u m a v e z q u e é c o m u m q u e a primeira s e n t e n c e
introduza o c o n t e ú d o d o parágrafo.
2.2.3 Scanning
A técnica d e s c a n n i n g c o n s i s t e e m u m a leitura r á p i d a , c o m o o skimming, mas agora c o m o objetivc
d e localizar i n f o r m a ç õ e s específicas no texto. S e o leitor está b u s c a n d o no texto d a t a s , n o m e s , n ú m e r o s ,
definições, etc., vai utilizar naturalmente a técnica d e scanning. U m leitor utiliza o scanning quando b u s c a
u m a i n f o r m a ç ã o específica e m u m jornal o u revista: e l e ' p a s s a o s o l h o s ' p e l a s páginas até e n c o n t r a r o
q u e procura e só e n t ã o fará a leitura propriamente dita. O termo scanning tem o r i g e m no v e r b o to scan
(explorar, e s c a n e a r ) .
O s c a n n i n g é g e r a l m e n t e utilizado:

• na b u s c a d e u m a p a l a v r a específica no texto;
