xxviii Stevia ( Stevia rebaudiana) is a member of the sunflower family and native to South and Central America, where it is commonly known as sweet
leaf or sugarleaf. Stevia extract is 300 times sweeter than sugar and has zero calories. Because stevia has a negligible effect on blood glucose, it is
used as a natural sweetener for people on carbohydrate-controlled diets, as well as those being treated for obesity and high blood pressure. Widely
used as a sweetener in Japan, stevia has been banned in the US as a food ingredient since the early 1990s, although it is legally sold as a
supplement. Rebiana is a trade name for a sweetener containing mainly the steviol glycoside rebaudioside.

Truvia is the brand name of a zero-calorie stevia sweetener marketed by Cargill and developed jointly with the Coca-Cola Company. In
December, 2008, the USDA permitted certain stevia-based sweeteners to be used as food additives. When shopping, experiment until you find
a product you like. Some have a bitter or licorice-like aftertaste at high concentrations.
