Special Operations differ from conventional operations in degree of physical and political risk,
operational techniques modes of employment and dependance on detailed operational intelligence and
indigenous assets. Special Operations are conducted in all environments, but are particularly well
suited for denied and politically sensitive environments. Special operations can be tailored to achieve
not only military objectives through application of special operations forces (SOF) capabilities for
which there are no broad conventional force requirements, but also to support the application of the
diplomatic, informational and economic instruments of national power.

Abstract
The rise of assymetric conflicts has led the USA to adapt its armed forces
constantly in order to face this new operational environment. This
transformation and adaptation in the deployment of its armed forces have
been particularly evident in the so called indirect actions carried out by its
special operations forces. The deployment of special operations forces
enhances the flexibility of the operational environment; for its low visibility
capability keeps the tensions among nations low and therefore avoids large
scale armed conflict. Thus these special operations forces are largely used
by the USA, and help them keep their vast global influence.
