A primeira mulher negra a estudar numa escola para brancos nos EUA.
Do outro lado do mundo, em meados da década de 1950 e 1960, os afro-
americanos travavam uma constante batalha contra o racismo nos
Estados Unidos. A partir da aprovação de uma lei que começava a forçar o
fim da segregação racial no país, várias escolas norte-americanas foram
obrigadas a aceitar alunos negros em suas instituições de ensino. Até
então, os afrodescendentes só podiam estudar em colégios destinados
exclusivamente aos negros. Os primeiros alunos negros a frequentar escolas para brancos sofreram
severos ataques físicos e verbais da sociedade local, principalmente das instituições de ensino do sul do
país. Elizabeth Eckford foi uma das primeiras estudantes afro-americanas a frequentar o Little Rock
Central High School, em Little Rock, no estado de Arkansas. Com uma população de alunos
predominantemente formada por brancos conservadores, Elizabeth Eckford foi duramente atacada e
mal recebida na escola. A sua persistência e força ao enfrentar os diversos insultos no colégio foi
