Hoje, vamos para o próximo passo e vamos descobrir como estudar ... gramática.

Socorro!!! Não quero estudar a gramática!!

Eu também fugia da gramática por muitos anos até que cansei de me sentir frustrada e cansada
de chutar toda vez que eu precisava conjugar um verbo ou usar uma preposição.

“É POR ou PARA aqui?”

“Eu estava? Eu estive? Nossa eu nunca sei quando usar esses verbos!”

Talvez você se identifique com isso. “I’m AT my office?” ou “I’m IN my office?” “Qual é a diferença
entre essas preposições?”

E MAKE e DO? O que é certo? “I make work” ou “I do work”?

E esse verbo GET? Parece que tem mil significados diferentes! “Quando devo usá-lo? Tem
regras?”

Para mim, não existe nada mais frustrante do que ouvir a resposta “Ah, não tem regras. Você só
tem que ouvir as pessoas falando e assim você vai saber”.

Olha, tem regras, sim! E essas regras vão facilitar sua vida MUITO!

OS 5 SIGNIFICADOS PRINCIPAIS DO VERBO TAKE

Conjugação: TAKE – TOOK - TAKEN

TAKE pode ter vários significados, dependendo do contexto! Os principais significados são
LEVAR, TOMAR, PEGAR, ACEITAR e FAZER. Vamos ver eles mais a fundo:

1. LEVAR
- Joe, can you TAKE us to the airport? = Joe, você pode nos LEVAR para o aeroporto?
(presente com o verbo modal “can”)

- No problem, I can TAKE you anywhere you like! = Sem problemas, posso te LEVAR onde
quiserem!
(presente com o verbo modal “can”)

- I TOOK the dog for a walk yesterday. = Eu LEVEI o cachorro para passear ontem.
(passado)

- Jerry HAS already TAKEN his mother to the hospital. = O Jerry já LEVOU a mãe dele para
o hospital.
(presente perfeito)

- Are you going to TAKE the girls to school today? = Você vai levar as meninas na escola hoje?
(futuro)

2. TOMAR
- Here, TAKE this book. I think you’ll like it. = Aqui, TOME este livro. Acho que você vai gostar
dele.
(presente simples)

- Did you TAKE her cell phone from her? = Você TOMOU o celular dela?
(passado)

- I will TAKE my medicine later = Eu vou TOMAR meu remédio mais tarde.
(futuro)

- Cindy likes to TAKE showers in the morning = A Cindy gosta de TOMAR banhos (duchas)
de manhã.
(presente simples)

- Mariano had TAKEN a sip when his mother called him. = O Mariano tinha TOMADO um gole
quando a mãe dele o chamou.

NOTA IMPORTANTE:
O sentido de “tomar” em “take” não é usado para expressar o mesmo que “beber”! Para esse
sentido, usamos o verbo “drink” ou “have”!

Exemplos:
“I DRINK coffee every day.” = Eu tomo/bebo café todo dia.
“I HAVE tea with milk every morning.” = Eu tomo/tenho chá com leite todas as manhãs.

*Quando alguém pergunta “How do you TAKE your coffee/tea?”, a pessoa quer saber como
você gosta do seu café (com leite, sem leite, com açúcar, com adoçante etc.)”

3. PEGAR
- Please, TAKE a cookie from the jar. = Por favor, PEGUE um biscoito do pote.
(presente simples imperativo)

- Pam TOOK the pen. = A Pam PEGOU a caneta.

(passado simples)

- Leonard doesn’t TAKE the bus to work. = O Leonard não PEGA o ônibus para o trabalho.
(presente simples)

- Has Amelia TAKEN the subway before? = A Amelia já PEGOU o metrô antes?
(presente perfeito)

- Help! That man TOOK my purse! = Socorro! Aquele homem PEGOU minha bolsa!
(passado simples)

4. ACEITAR
- Do you TAKE this woman as your wife? = Você ACEITA esta mulher como sua esposa?
(presente simples)

- He TOOK our offer! = Ele ACEITOU nossa proposta!

(passado simples)

- Did Cecilia TAKE Louie’s gift? = A Cecília ACEITOU o presente do Louie?

- They TAKE cash, check, or credit card here. = Eles ACEITAM dinheiro, cheque, ou cartão de
crédito aqui.

- He wants to TAKE an English course. = Ele quer FAZER um curso de inglês.

- Have you ever TAKEN a cooking class? = Você já alguma vez FEZ uma aula de culinária?
(presente perfeito)

- Sheyla didn’t TAKE the exam yesterday. = A Sheyla não FEZ a prova ontem.

1 - “TAKE” em expressões

Take a look = Dar uma olhada

- We have lots of interesting things in our store! Take a look! = Temos muitas coisas interessantes
na nossa loja! Dêem uma olhada!
- What’s in the box? Can I take a look? = O que tem na caixa? Posso dar uma olhada?

Take a seat. = Sentar-se

- Please, take a seat. = Por favor, sente-se.

- Take a seat on the sofa and enjoy the movie. = Sente-se no sofá e curta o filme!

Take a right/left = Vire a direita, esquerda

- Okay, take a right here. = Okay, vire à direita aqui.

- He took a left on Madison Street = Ele virou à esquerda na Rua Madison.

Take a bath/shower = Tomar um banho de banheira/chuveiro

2 – “TAKE” em phrasal verbs

Take off = Remover; Deslanchar/Cecolar

- The plane is taking off. = O avião está decolando.

- Please, take off your hat. = Por favor, tire seu chapéu.

Take on = Assumir a responsabilidade de algo ou alguém

- Don’t take on any more clients! = Não assuma mais clientes!

- Elise took on another puppy to take care of. = A Elise assumiu outro filhotinho de cachorro pra
cuidar.

Take over = Dominar

- They want to take over the world. = Eles querem dominar o mundo.
- Young people have taken over the mall. = Jovens tem “dominado” o shopping.

Take up = Começar a fazer algo novo

- I think I’ll take up gardening as a new hobby. = Acho que vou começar jardinagem como um
novo hobby.
- Pedro took up piano. = O Pedro começou (a estudar) piano.

THE 05 MAIN MEANINGS OF THE VERB TAKE

Conjugation: TAKE – TOOK - TAKEN

TAKE can have many meanings depending on the context! Let’s learn about the five MAIN meanings.

1. - Bob, can you TAKE the kids to school?

(present with modal verb “can”)

- The taxi will TAKE you anywhere if you pay the driver.
(future will)

- Julia TOOK her dogs for a walk last week.

(simple past)

- We’ve TAKEN the packages, so don’t worry.

(present perfect)

- Your sister is going to TAKE the cake to the party, right?

(future be going to)

- Had you TAKEN grandma to the doctor when I called?

(past perfect)

As you might have guessed, in these examples the verb “take” means “levar”!

2. - Here, TAKE this laptop. The other one is broken.

(imperative)

- Had Mom TAKEN the medicine when we arrived?

(past perfect)

- Karina is TAKING a shower now.

(present continuous)

- It’s like TAKING candy from a baby!

(simple present)

- Did Pierre TAKE a drink from this?

(simple past)

The meaning of “take” in these sentences is “tomar”!

IMPORTANT NOTE: We don’t use “take” to express “tomar um líquido”; in this case, we use
“drink” or “have.”

Examples:
- I drink/have coffee every day.
- Would you like to drink/have a lemonade?

When someone asks, “How do you TAKE your coffee?”, they want to know how you like your
coffee - with sugar, without sugar, with milk or without milk, etc.
- How do you take your tea?
- With a little sugar. Thank you.

3. - Can I TAKE a cup from here?

(present with modal verb “can”)

- Hey, you TOOK my pillow! This one is yours!

(simple past)

- I hate TAKING the bus. I prefer TO TAKE the subway.

(simple present)

- Joe had TAKEN the documents before the meeting. That’s why we couldn’t find them.
(past perfect)

- Has Cindy TAKEN the bus before?

(present perfect)

- Why would someone TAKE my keys?

(conditional with the modal verb “would”)

The meaning of “take” in these sentences is “pegar.”

4. - I’m not going to TAKE this insult!

(future - be going to)

- Do you TAKE this man as your husband?

(simple present)

- George TOOK the job offer, and he’s very happy.

(simple past)

- They TAKE cash, check, or credit card at that restaurant.

(simple present)

- Jim hasn’t been TAKING our offers. I think we should move on.
(present perfect continuous)

- Caitlin says that she didn’t TAKE the money.

(simple past)

In these sentences, the meaning of “take” is “aceitar”.

- I hate TAKING tests. They’re so boring.

(simple present)

- Should I TAKE a Spanish course or a French course?

(present with modal verb “should”)

- Carol has decided to TAKE a class about marketing strategies.

(present perfect)

- Joseph was sick, so he couldn’t TAKE the exam last week.

(simple past)

- Hey, are you TAKING the TOEFL exam this year?

(future present continuous)

In these sentences, TAKE means “fazer (aulas, lições, provas, testes, cursos, exames
acadêmicos)”

Take a look = Dar uma olhada

- I heard a noise outside! Can you take a look and see what it is?

- I took a look at your text, and I have some comments about it.

Take a seat. = Sentar-se

- Please, take a seat over there.

- I’ll just take a seat on the sofa.

- Henry took a seat next to his wife.

2 – “TAKE” in phrasal verbs

Take off = remover ou deslanchar/decolar

- When does the plane take off?

- I don’t want to take my gloves off, it’s cold.

Take on = assumir a responsabilidade de algo ou alguém

- Patty doesn’t want to take on more clients because she’s too busy.

- Please, Luisa, don’t take on any more responsibilities.

- Carlos is taking on two more classes.

Take over = dominar

- The villain is trying to take over the world! We must stop him!

- Stray cats have taken over that empty lot. There so many of them!

Take up = começar a fazer algo novo

- How about we take up a new hobby? I’ve always wanted to try painting.

- Julian was going to take up kayaking, but he gave up because he didn’t have time.

- Megan said she took up bird watching after she moved to the mountains.
