ABSTRACT
Diabetes Mellitus (DM) refers to a group of different metabolic disorders and multifactorial
background that share the hyperglycemia phenotype and its prevalence is growing as a result
of the increased number of elderly people, idleness and obesity. The DM is classified in four
clinical classes: type 1, type 2, other specific types, such as Gestational Diabetes Mellitus
(GDM), ranked Gestational Type 1 and Type Gestational 2. The DMG is responsible for
deaths and birth anomalies. The objective of this study is to investigate on literature the
nursing pratical in supportive care to pregnant women with diabetes in order to reduce
maternal, fetal and perinatal complications. Methodology: Research bibliographic held in
printed papers and on-line, complete, published in Portuguese, from 2008 to 2014, the Virtual
Health Library (VHL), on the basis of data ScieLLO, LILLACS, MEDLINE, and DESCs for
the descriptors: Obstetrics, Pregnancy, Diabetes. Results: 30 articles were found and 18
selected for this review. There is a consensus among authors about the responsibility of
assistance to pregnant women being also in charge of nursing, requiring from the professional
to be careful and certified of its main actions. The diabetic prenatal has great influence on the
fetus development and complications in the newborn (NB), due to quality of care that has a
direct impact on the children and the lives of these women. Conclusion: despite technological
advances in the area, there is still a welfare gap, considering that 25% of newborns (NB) of
diabetic mothers have complications neonatal.
