In summary, a promising nonfullerene acceptor (ITTC) with a new end group TC was
designed, synthesized and characterized. This n-type small molecule ITTC shows strong
and redshifted absorption relative to ITIC and matched energy levels with the polymer
donor HFQx-T. Moreover, the optimized HFQx-T:ITTC blend films exhibit high and
balanced hole and electron mobilities and nanoscale phase separated interpenetrating
networks. The fullerene-free PSC based on HFQxT:ITTC (1 : 1, w/w) blend films afforded a
PCE of 8.19% without any post-treatment. Furthermore, the devices delivered an
impressive PCE of 10.40% with a higher Jsc of 16.49 mA cm2 and a FF of 0.71 after TA.
Our preliminary investigations show that ITTC has great potential and could be an
interesting candidate for fullerene-free PSCs. Although HFQx-T:ITTC blend films have
reached high efficiencies, much more work remains to be done to improve photovoltaic
parameters through material modification and device engineering. We strongly believe
that mapping more high performance donors to match rapidly developing electron
acceptors will hold bright future for tomorrow's photovoltaics.

These studies demonstrate that m-terphenyl-templated

DATB derivatives featuring a B3NO2 heterocyclic core are
stable chemical entities and outperform previously
reported catalysts in direct amidations. The broadened
substrate scope appears to be driven by a distinct
mechanism, and it should be possible to refine it even
further through structural and electronic manipulations of
DATB, which will significantly advance the sustainable and
economical catalytic synthesis of amides.

Fe–Mn–Si–Cr–Ni alloys are second generation shape memory Fe-Mn based alloys. Since the
discovery of the shape memory effect on Fe-Mn and Fe-Mn-Si alloys by Sato et al. [1], several
studies were developed to improve their properties [2]; [3]; [4]; [5] ; [6]. Some advantages of
ferrous-based shape memory alloys are low cost, good workability and ease of processing [7].
Besides shape memory properties, corrosion properties of these alloys have also been
studied [6]; [7]; [8]; [9]; [10]; [11] ; [12]. The improvement of corrosion properties was
achieved by adding Cr and Ni [6] ; [12], generating the designation of “shape memory
stainless steel” [8]. The addition of Co was also investigated in corrosion conditions,
generating better results than AISI 304 conventional stainless steel [11]. However, oxidation
studies are still incipient. Ma et al. [13] studied isothermal oxidation in an Fe-14.3Mn-5.6Si-
8.2Cr-5.0Ni alloy at 800 °C, observing the Mn and Mn/Cr spinel oxide formation, and Nevin
Balo and Yakuphanoglu [14] verified the chromium effect in isothermal oxidation in Fe-30Mn-
6Si and Fe-30Mn-6Si-5Cr shape memory alloys at 600, 700, 800 and 900 °C.
Another phenomenon related to Fe–Mn–Si–Cr–Ni oxidation is the decreasing Mn content in the
metal near the metal/oxide interface [10] ; [13]. Coccia Lecis et al. [10] used this phenomenon
to improve the corrosion resistance in an Fe-28Mn-6.15Si-5.16Cr alloy, oxidizing and
removing the oxide before performing the corrosion test. The improvement was due to the
Mn-depleted zone microstructure transforming from austenite to ferrite.
Considering that high-temperature cyclic oxidation is an important cause of damage to ferrous
alloys and that ferritic stainless steels suffer less spallation than austenitic stainless steels in the
same condition [15], this study aimed at evaluating the cyclic oxidation resistance of an Fe–
Mn–Si–Cr–Ni alloy.

A new small molecule, ITTC, bearing an indacenodithieno[3,2-b]thiophene core and a 2-

(6-oxo-5,6- dihydro-4H-cyclopenta[c]thiophen-4-ylidene)malononitrile end group, was
designed, synthesized and characterized as a non-fullerene electron acceptor. The ITTC
possesses strong and broad light absorption, high and balanced charge mobility and a
nanoscale interpenetrating morphology when blended with a recently synthesized
hexafluoroquinoxaline based polymer donor-HFQx-T. HFQx-T was obtained from a Stille
coupling copolymerization of a 2,6-bis(trimethyltin)-4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl) thiophene-
2-yl)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b0 ]dithiophene electron donating unit and a hexafluoroquinoxaline
based electron accepting unit. The device employing HFQx-T as the donor and ITTC as
the acceptor delivered a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 8.19% without any post-
treatment. After thermal annealing, an impressive PCE of 10.4% was obtained. This
performance is among the highest PCEs reported for fullerene-free polymer solar cells
up to date. This study demonstrates the great potential of ITTC as n-type materials for
organic electronics.

Zinc alkaline anodes command significant share of consumer battery markets and are a key
technology for the emerging grid-scale battery market. Improved understanding of this electrode is
required for long-cycle deployments at kWh and MWh scale due to strict requirements on
performance, cost, and safety. Here we give a modern literature survey of zinc alkaline anodes with
levelized performance metrics and also present an experimental assessment of leading formulations.
Long-cycle materials characterization, performance metrics, and failure analysis are reported for
over 25 unique anode formulations with up to 1500 cycles and ∼1.5 years of shelf life per test.
Statistical repeatability of these measurements is made for a baseline design (fewest additives) via 15
duplicates. Baseline design capacity density is 38 mAh per mL of anode volume, and lifetime
throughput is 72 Ah per mL of anode volume. We then report identical measurements for anodes with
improved material properties via additives and other perturbations, some of which achieve capacity
density over 192 mAh per mL of anode volume and lifetime throughput of 190 Ah per mL of anode
volume. Novel in operando X-ray microscopy of a cycling zinc paste anode reveals the formation of a
nanoscale zinc material that cycles electrochemically and replaces the original anode structure over
long-cycle life. Ex situ elemental mapping and other materials characterization suggest that the key
physical processes are hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), growth of zinc oxide nanoscale material,
concentration deficits of OH– and ZnOH42–, and electrodeposition of Zn growths outside and through
separator membranes.

The expansion of molecular diversity beyond what nature can produce is a

fundamental objective in chemical sciences. Despite the rich chemistry of boron-
containing heterocycles, the 1,3-dioxa-5-aza-2,4,6-triborinane (DATB) ring system,
which is characterized by a six-membered B3NO2 core, remains elusive. Here, we
report the synthesis of m-terphenyltemplated DATB derivatives, displaying high
stability and peculiar Lewis acidity arising from the three suitably arranged boron
atoms. We identify a particular utility for DATB in the dehydrative amidation of
carboxylic acids and amines, a reaction of high academic and industrial importance.
The three boron sites are proposed to engage in substrate assembly, lowering the
entropic cost of the transition state, in contrast with the operative mechanism of
previously reported catalysts and amide coupling reagents. The distinct mechanistic
pathway dictated by the DATB core will advance not only such amidations, but also
other reactions driven by multisite activation.

Fe–Mn–Si–Cr–Ni alloys are known by their shape memory properties,

however, oxidation studies are still incipient. This study evaluated an
Fe-17Mn-5Si-10Cr-4Ni-VC alloy on cyclic oxidation tests at 800, 900 and
1000 °C. Mass variation was evaluated and oxide layers were examined
by SEM, EDS and XRD. An anomalous mass variation was observed:
after initial spallation, the material restarted mass gain. The formed Mn-
depleted zone changed the austenite microstructure to ferrite on the
metal/oxide interface and better oxide anchoring was promoted
through the roughness generated. The result makes this alloy an
interesting candidate for applications where cyclic oxidation is an
important issue.
