ABSTRACT: The quest for effective anchorage systems that minimize patient
collaboration requirements has been an ongoing challenge in orthodontics.
In this context, temporary anchorage devices, particularly mini-implants
(MIs), emerge as a promising solution. MIs offer absolute skeletal anchorage
and bring significant advantages, such as ease of insertion, reduced cost,
and independence from patient cooperation. Furthermore, they present
viable alternatives in treatments that would traditionally require extractions
and/or orthognathic surgery. This study aims to evaluate, through a
literature review, the role of MIs in correcting and compensating for Class II
and Class III malocclusions, as well as bimaxillary protrusions, highlighting
the preferred anatomical locations for their placement and implications for
orthodontic planning. The methodology included analyzing relevant studies
discussing the clinical applications of MIs, ranging from the retraction of
anterior teeth to the correction of the occlusal plane. The results indicate that
MIs are effective for a wide range of orthodontic movements, with a high
success rate and minimal adverse effects. The conclusions emphasize the
importance of careful and individualized planning, considering the safe
anatomical zones for MIs installation and applying the appropriate
orthodontic mechanics to achieve treatment objectives.
