5 Entre os trabalhos que deram notoriedade a W alton, tornando-o um dos expoentes da Lógica
Informal, estão Argumentation Schemes for Presumptive Reasoning (I 996) e Argumentation
Schemes (2008), este escrito em coautoria com C. Reed e F. Macagno. Nestas obras, o autor
identifica inúmeros esquemas argumentativos a partir dos padrões típicos de raciocínio que
caracterizam os argumentos. Mostra, igualmente, formas usuais de falhas argumentativas (nem
sempre identificadas como falaciosas). Dada a extensão do assunto e o propósito do presente
capítulo, não apresentaremos neste texto os mencionados esquemas argumentativos.

(ou mais) partes, sendo que ao menos uma dessas partes possui uma tese
ou ponto de vista. Já o processo dinâmico de conexão dos argumentos
para determinado objetivo é dito argumentação. As razões oferecidas
para apoiar a conclusão constituem o cerne do argumento; todavia, Wal-
ton (2006b, p. 2) salienta que "em tomo deste núcleo há também uma
estrutura de uso argumentativo na qual a argumentação é utilizada para
algum propósito em um diálogo".
Como anteriormente dito, são muitos os contextos argumentativos.
Igualmente, são variados os contextos de atividades nos quais um argu-
mento pode ocorrer. Um destes contextos é o dialógico. Os raciocínios que
ocorrem em argumentos que, por sua vez, ocorrem em um diálogo, são
ditos raciocínios dialéticos. Estes são os argumentos preferencialmente
investigados por Walton e, por conseguinte, os contextos dialógicos são,
igualmente, objeto de estudo do autor.
Walton (1990, p. 412) ressalva que há uma interpretação, distinta
da dele, segundo a qual todo o contexto argumentativo é dialógico, pois
até em situações solitárias como no planejamento ou resolução de um
problema, pode-se dizer que há raciocínio interativo com si próprio. A
pessoa em questão faz o duplo papel de arguidor e interlocutor. Embora
afirme que um argumento pode não ocorrer em um diálogo, para Walton
(2006b, p. 1) "a noção de um argumento é mais bem elucidada em ter-
mos de seu propósito quando usada em um diálogo". E o que seria um
diálogo? Nas palavras do autor,
