ABSTRACTS
According to the Ministry of Health HIV is the English acronym for the human
immunodeficiency virus. Causer of AIDS, it attacks the immune system, responsible for
defending the body from diseases. The most affected cells are CD4+ T lymphocytes. And it
is by altering the DNA of that cell that HIV makes copies of itself. The diagnosis is made as
follows: serum or plasma samples must first be linked to an immunoassay, called ELISA
(“test 1″ – capable of identifying both anti-HIV-1 and anti-HIV-2), this step is called serological
screening. Samples with non-reactive “test 1″ results will be defined as “HIV negative
sample”. In this case, the diagnosis of the infection is completed, an additional test will not be
necessary. Samples with reactive or inconclusive results in this first immunoassay will need
to undergo a serological confirmation step: indirect immunofluorescence, immunoblot or
western blot. A second immunoassay, different from the first in its antigenic constitution or
methodological principle, and confirmatory tests. If the result is positive, after the serological
confirmation step, the laboratories will request a new sample from the patient, in order to
confirm their serological status. Preferably 30 days after the issuance of the result referring
to the first sample. If there are different results in all methods, Western blotting will be
necessary.
