Portugal

Portugal is located on the Iberian Peninsula with Spain. It feels like

San Francisco, but older and prettier.
The capital of Portugal is Lisbon. It is
known for its great culture. In Belem
you can visit the monastery where the
sailors would go and pray before going
out to sea. There is a Naval Museum
there. The sailors went to many places
and brought back gold and treasure.

The Pasteis de Belem is a pastry shop that is very famous. They are known for their
custard cakes. They make 10,000 a day, using a secret recipe. It began in 1837, and
only three workers and the boss know the recipe.
In Lisbon, there are many tiny bars that serve the popular drink, Ginjinha. It is made
from ginja berries and alchohol. The people of Lisbon have a saying;” If something is too good to put into
words, you say that it is better than ginjinha.”

About two hours north is the small fishing town of Nazare. This is a great place

to see the old Portugal lifestyle. If you walk the back streets, you can see the
everyday life of the people there. The women have a custom of wearing seven
petticoats. A petticoat is like a slip that ladies wear under their clothes. They would
use these to keep warm when they were at the sea waiting for their sailors to come
home.

At the beach you will see folk groups playing music and people dancing. You will see a lot
of sun dried and salted fish. But the most popular is the Percebes. It is a barnacle and
considered a great delicacy. A barnacle is an animal with a hard shell, like a crab. They
stick to hard surfaces.

If you take the Finicular (Hill Train) you

can go up to the small town of Sitio. The
Finicular was built in 1889, the same year
as the Eiffel Tower. It was built by a
student of Eiffel himself.
Nazare is a fishing town, but Sitio is a farming town. It is different. You
have great views from this small town.
The most popular restaurant is the Abucheo Restaurant. There you can drink Vino Verde (green wine). This
wine is picked, made, and drunk in one year.

Just a few kilometers from Nazere, is the Portugal Natural Museum of Wine. There are 20
tanks and 227,124 liters of grape juice.

The next stop is Fatima. It is here in the Basilica the Virgin Marry
appeared in May 13, 1917 to three young shepherds. She said to
them, “Peace is needed.” On the 13th day of each month she
appeared for 5 months. Now, people gather on the 13th day here to
pray.

One hour north of Fatima is the small town of Coimbra. It is the third largest city and one of the oldest. It is
home to the University of Coimbra, one of the most prestigious universities in Portugal.

The large square is called the “Largo da

Portagem.” It is the place to go for coffee, people
watching, or a pastry.
You can go to the tourist office and get a private
tour.

At the other end of your walk is the’ “Porta de la

Cruz.” This is another square and here you can
eat at the famous Trovatore Restaurant. It is one
of the best restaurants in Coimbra.
