The teaching and learning process involves a set of teacher's actions developed
in certain contexts that produce student learning. Teaching means to interact
with the students for the promotion of significant changes in the lives of students
outside the school context. Presenting instructions, asking questions, giving
activities and models are procedures used by professor in interaction with the
students to achieve the goals of teaching/learning. This study intended to
investigate the teaching behaviors of a teacher from elementary school,
enclosing children aged 5 to 6 years which achieved the objectives of this level
of education. In addition to that, were investigated the conditions under which
these procedures took place and what the students behaviors related to the
teaching behaviors of . Two Portuguese lessons were in a class with several
children at the age of four or five. The filming was transcribed and organized
into functional charts and the teaching behaviors of educator were analyzed in
order of the frequency as its occurrence and its relation to the preceding and
following behaviors of the students. It was found that the teacher used more
often the procedures of presenting instructions and questions (in order to obtain
information on the content and with disciplinary function). It was also
categorized behaviors such as correction procedures, announcing activities,
praising and displaying the contents. It was noticed that most of the questions
asked by the teacher were related to the content of the discipline and the
instructions for the most part described only the responses to be presented by
students during the implementation of activities. Whereas the teaching of
teacher behaviors occured depending on the preceding and resulting behaviors
of the students, it can be verified that the performance of this teacher was quite
sensitive to the students’ demands.
