RESUMO
ABSTRACT
Introduction. With the arrival of old age, the possibility of retirement arises,
thus causing changes in the environment and emptying the routine, often
causing feelings of idleness, anxiety and emptiness and a decrease in the
quality of life for the elderly. Therefore, the quality of life of the elderly in their
retirement must be linked to satisfaction with health, social relationships, leisure
and financial and cultural resources. Objective. The work aimed to discuss the
theme of retirement and friendship throughout an optional discipline of the
Occupational Therapy course at the University of Brasília. Method. Texts
published in databases were searched to support this experience report, in
which it presents the academic practice of Occupational Therapy through
conversations with people known through telephone contact in an attempt to
understand what it was like to retire and the importance of interpersonal
relationships. after retiring from October to November 2020. Results. During
the course, 4 elderly people reported that, according to them, retirement
brought the opportunity to use their time in the best way with activities they
enjoy. With the pandemic, many said they had lost friends and began to value
friendship relationships more. Conclusion. Even though the aging process is
something natural and expected, there is still a need to look after retirement,
whether in interpersonal relationships or occupations. The role of the
occupational therapist in this context would be to help the elderly to understand
that it is possible to maintain an active life with social relationships, facilitating
the discovery of activities that bring life production.
