SUMMARY
· The intention of this article is to set in discussion sorne hy-
pothesis on the process of integration .of indian populations in
northeast of Brazil. In that region still remains about 13,000 of
the 12 tribal groups, intensily mestizo and barely keeping their
traditional culture; they live today in 'reserves' controlled by
Eunda9~0 Nacional do fndio (FUNAI).
They provide sorne basic agrarian products in the area pro-
moting their supporting developed by the elementary family. They
are deeply involved in monetary system of capitalist nature ·and
they are· aware of the economy in the area through the market-
place. Thus, they can be define as part-societies, i. e., rural so-
cieties.
However, these tribal groups have béen reached by a pro-
gressive proletarization process, in proportion to the insuf(icie~~y
of the 'reserves' in allowing the independent work of all their
grotip. I(means that if will be·come . necessaty to sell manpower
tó the white man, the only way to assure the indispensable acqui-
sition of money.
.Together with this it. will .graddualy occur · the Ioss of ethnic
identity that still exists, .sin ce the ones who are f orced to look
for a job outside their tribal setting, should disguise themselves,
in order not to be stigmatized by the various prejudices against
the indians.
The author is professor of Social Anthropology at Federal
University of Rio de Janeiro.
