ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION: obstetric violence (OV) is a global problem that affects the dignity,
autonomy and health of women during childbirth and the postpartum period. It manifests
itself in many ways, from lack of information and consent to physical and emotional abuse.
Nurses play a fundamental role in preventing and combating this violence, as they are in
direct contact with pregnant women and women in labor. This summary explores the
importance of nurses' actions in preventing obstetric violence. OBJECTIVE: the objective of
this study is to analyze the role of nurses in preventing obstetric violence.
METHODOLOGY: to achieve the proposed objective, a comprehensive bibliographic
review was carried out using the SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online), LILACS,
IBECS and BDENF databases, which included scientific articles and books related to
obstetric violence and the role of nurses in prevention, listed and published in the period from
2017 to 2022. Data analysis included the identification of strategies and best practices
recommended in the literature. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS: the results of this review
indicate that nurses play a fundamental role in preventing obstetric violence, with some
strategies to identify and combat obstetric violence. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: this
study reports the importance and relevance of nurses' actions in preventing and intervening in
situations of obstetric violence.
