RESUMO
ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION: The Influenza virus remains one of the greatest public health
challenges in the world, being responsible for recurring annual epidemics, causing
acute respiratory infection ranging from mild conditions such as rhinopharyngitis to
viral pneumonia with fatal complications. The World Health Organization (WHO)
estimates that there are one billion cases of the disease worldwide, with types A and
B being the most clinically important. There are several subtypes of influenza A, but
the viruses that currently circulate and infect humans are subtypes A (H3N2) and A
(H1N1). OBJECTIVE: To present information about the influenza virus and the
disease, epidemiological data on this condition, how the diagnosis is made, ways of
prevention and what are the new challenges that are presented. METHODOLOGY:
Exploratory bibliographic research was used as an instrument of methodological
approach using several databases, searching for associated or not descriptors:
Influenza, H1N1, vaccination, diagnosis and epidemiology. LITERATURE REVIEW:
The 1918 flu, known as the Spanish Flu, was a pandemic caused by an influenza
virus with an unusual and deadly virulence of the H1N1 subtype; between September
and December 1918, in Brazil, 65% of the population fell ill. There has been
significant progress in medical science with the development of vaccines, antiviral
drugs and improved diagnosis, but in 2009, the influenza A H1N1 virus scared the
world population again, causing the first pandemic of the 21st century. The influenza
virus has an unpredictable nature and, aware that a new epidemic may occur in the
coming years, it is essential that public health services are prepared and strategies
are effective. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that the permanent monitoring of the
Influenza virus is of great importance, as well as the early notification of cases. It is
ratified that the recommendations for alert and prevention must be maintained,
especially vaccination, considered the most efficient preventive measure against the
disease.

Outras técnicas moleculares incluem a tecnologia do DNA microarray utilizada
como velocidade, rendimento e custo (WANG, TAUBENBERGER, 2010; WORLD
