RESUMO
ABSTRACT
The effect of strength training on cognition in the elderly has been the object of study
with the aim of assessing cognitive improvement. The aim of this review was to verify
the effects of strength training on the cognitive function of the elderly. Searches were
carried out in the following databases: Pubmed, Scielo, Lilacs and Cochrane.
Descriptors were used for strength training and outcomes in cognition and cognitive
function. After applying the evaluation criteria, 7 studies were selected for inclusion in
the present study. Current data demonstrate that strength training can improve
cognitive function in healthy, frail elderly or with pre-established cognitive illness. Thus,
strength training, when practiced for more than 12 weeks, shows improvement in
cognitive function.
