Laboratory InvesFgaFon Comparing Plaque Removal Efficacy of Two Novel-Design
Toothbrushes with Different Brushing Techniques.
Abstract
Manufacturers of manual toothbrushes have improved novel brush head designs aimed at
achieving good plaque removal even with inadequate brushing technique. This study tested
the plaque removal efficacy of two novel designs compared with a flat trimmed toothbrush
with different brushing techniques. Two novel-design toothbrushes (Colgate® 360°
Surround and Oral-B® Pro-Health™ Clinical Pro-Flex) were tested. The control toothbrush was
Butler® GUM 311. ArFficial plaque was applied on arFficial teeth. Brushing with the modified
Bass and horizontal scrub technique was then performed independently. Acer brushing, the
remaining plaque index and Proximal Marginal Index (PMI) were evaluated.
With the same brushing technique, there was no staFsFcally significant difference in the
mean of the whole mouth plaque scores or PMI among the three different toothbrush
designs with neither brushing techniques (p > 0.05). When a comparison was made between
the mean PMI of the two brushing techniques in each toothbrush design, Colgate® showed
no staFsFcally significant difference with either brushing technique (p > 0.05), but Butler®
and Oral-B® showed staFsFcally significantly less PMI with modified Bass technique than with
horizontal scrub technique (p < 0.05).
No difference in the whole mouth plaque removal efficacy was found among the three
different toothbrush designs with either brushing technique.

To identify and map existing evidence on the effectiveness of interdental cleaning devices in
preventing dental caries and periodontal diseases, a scoping review was carried out by
electronically searching PubMed, Scopus and Embase. Studies on interdental cleaning
devices, written in English, and published from January 2008 up to April 2019 were included
in the review. Of 1860 studies identified, six systematic reviews (SR) were included in the
review. One SR each was on flossing, interdental brushes, wood sticks and oral irrigation. Of
two SR on multitude of interdental cleaning devices, one assessed comparative efficacy while
the other both the individual and comparative efficacy.
All reviews had assessed the heterogeneity and the methodological quality of studies
included, and performed data extraction and meta-analysis where appropriate. Evidence
ranged from weak to moderate with very low- to low-certainty for the adjunctive benefit of
these devices to control plaque and gingivitis.
Necessidade de limpeza interproximal
It warrants long-term studies with sufficient power and those assessing the impact of
interdental cleaning on interproximal caries to corroborate such evidence.
Available evidence on the efficacy of interdental cleaning devices suggests that dental
practitioners recommend patient-specific interdental cleaning devices that enable patients to
achieve a safe and high standard of interdental cleaning.

not able to achieve sufficient plaque removal by performing oral hygiene measures
at home. Therefore, tooth brushing twice daily is recommended by most of the
denasts in order to improve plaque control. This rule is followed by most of the
paaents taking care for their oral health and has shown to be effecave in
maintenance of oral health in numerous studies. Study of the literature gives no
clear evidence as to the opamal ame-point of tooth brushing (before or aher
meals). However, in order to eliminate food impacaon and to shorten the duraaon
of sucrose impact by tooth cleaning aher meals seems to be recommendable.
Although--with our current knowledge of potenaal harm due to brushing of
erosively altered and sohened tooth surfaces--giving advice on a more individual
basis is recommended for paaents suffering from erosion.
