No Brasil, alimentos
avaliando os conceitos atuais e suscitando novas questões.
ABSTRACT
The way in which children behave as consumers has been the object of study since the mid-
1970s. Since then, the economic power and influence of children on family decisions has increased
considerably, combined with the development of advertising strategies aimed specifically at child
consumer. The increase in non-communicable chronic diseases (obesity, diabetes) has drawn attention to
the role of the media: on average children and adolescents spend an average of 5-6 hours a day watching
television, and the number of commercials aired has increased from 11 to 40 per hour for the past 20
years. In Brazil, food occupies the highest frequency of advertisements, with 60% of them belonging to
the group represented by fats, oils, sugars and sweets in the food pyramid. Generally speaking, children
and adolescents are not mature enough to control their purchasing decisions; although regulations
surrounding the marketing of food to children are evolving rapidly, there are few models that can lead to
the development of effective future strategies. There is still much to be learned about the consumer
socialization process. The field is open for research that analyzes cultural and technological aspects,
evaluating current concepts and raising new questions.
