The U.S. premiere of the anime sequel, “Dragon Ball Z,” starring
an older Goku who protects Earth from an ever-escalating array
of villains while also contending with fatherhood and his lost
heritage, was when Toriyama’s stories really took root in the
West.
Since its creation in the 1980s, it has spanned 42 volumes, sold
millions of copies worldwide and become one of the most
famous manga, inspiring television, film and video game
adaptations.
His first brush with the manga industry came at age 23, when he
entered a piece into a contest run by a weekly manga magazine.
It didn’t work out – but he soon began sending in drawings to a
different publication: Weekly Shōnen Jump.
