I. Introduction

The present fieldwork of English Language is subordinated to the theme, “Greetings, Verb to
Be, Number and Dates”.
First, we have to know that English Language is the most important language in the world,
mainly in a business world. Nowadays, everyone should be aware of it, particularly those
searching for a job. Therefore, the better way of studying English is starting right from the basic,
(Greetings) together with the verb to be, since it’s the most important verb in the English
Language.
Within this research work, will be presented some rules for using the verb to be in the present
simple tense, with different personal pronouns (1st,2nd and 3rd) singular and plural.

2. Work objectives

2.1 . Main objective

o Analyze the use the verb to Be

2.1.2. Specific Objectives:
o Present the different forms of the verb to Be
o Explains ordinal and cardinal numbers
o Differentiate cardinal and ordinal numbers

3. Methodology

For the formalization of this work, an exploratory research was carried out, through bibliographic
surveys and examples of practical applications, in order to clarify some misconceptions or solve
concrete needs.
According to GIL (2002, p. 44-45), bibliographic research is developed based on material already
prepared, consisting mainly of books and scientific articles”. The main advantage of
bibliographic research is that it allows the researcher to cover a much wider range of phenomena
than he could research directly. Its purpose is to put the researcher in contact with what has
already been produced and recorded about the research topic. Such advantages reveal the
1
commitment to research quality. In addition to allowing the survey of research related to the
subject studied, the bibliographic research also allows the theoretical deepening that guides this
research.

4. Meeting for the first time

In our first meeting, we try to create a context, which will lead to new meanings and ways
forward for those involved in a situation that is surrounded by a number of concerned people.
Without context, words and actions have no meaning at all.

Look at the following sentences David uses to introduce himself to someone for the first time.
Change the underlined words to make sentences about yourself.

Hi, my name is Araújo. I’m from Dondo.

I’m 33 years old. I like reading books and music. I’m studying Portuguese.

(a) Hi, my name is Araújo. What’s your name?

(b) My name is Margarida.

(a) Nice to meet you Margarida.

(b) Nice to meet you too. (shake hands). Where are you from?

(a) I’m from Dondo, how about you?

(b) I’m from Gorongosa. What do you study?

(a) I study Portuguese, how about you?

(b) I study Geography.

(a) How old are you?

(b) I’m 33, how about you?

(a) I’m 30. I like running. What do you like?

(b) I like playing footbal and paying guitar.

(a) Nice meeting you. I have a class now. See you later.

(b) OK, goodbye.

According to Lester, Franklin and Yokota, (2009,p.8),The base form of the verb to Be is
different from all of its present tense forms.

According to Dickie (n.d) there are two different kinds of numbers in English, she goes further
saying that there are numbers that we use to count things which are called cardinal numbers, like
one, twenty, one hundred, etc. Moreover, The other kind of numbers is called Ordinal Numbers,
used to An Ordinal Number is a number that tells the position of something in a list, such as 1st,
2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th etc. Most ordinal numbers end in "th" except for:

 one ⇒ first (1st)

 two ⇒ second (2nd)
 three ⇒ third (3rd)

We use also ordinal numbers to say dates.

Find out the birthdays of your classmates by asking the question below. Then write their names
beside the correct month. Try to find someone for every month.

8. Conclusion

The present research work of English Language 1, subordinated to the topic " Greetings, Verb
to Be, Number and Dates " was carried out based on a bibliographic methodology where after
the analysis of several works that deal with this subject I can now conclude that the Verb to Be,
has different from all of its present tense forms. (Am, Is and Are), and this is the most important
verb we have in English language.

Concerned to the numbers In English, there are two kinds of numbers in English, ordinal used
when referring to the order of things or people for example 1st,3rd, 11th and cardinal numbers,
also called count numbers, 1, 3, 11, we use ordinal numbers with dates.
