Introduction
The current work talks about the advantage of living in a democratic country where the system of
the government in the modern world has various merits by providing efficient government
guarantees , the rights of the people , provide equality , educates the people , promote national
characters , brings peaceful change of government believes not in bottle axe , but in ballot box .

4
A brief background of democracy.
According to PAIZEE (2013:122-123)The word democracy comes from the Greek words “demos” ,
meaning people and “kratos” meaning power of the people .However, after world war I , in Europe
, the largest Austro- Hungarian empire and the ottoman or Turkish empires were dissolved and
formed into many new , smaller states .however, in Latin ,America , Asia and some parts of Europe,
several dictatorships remained . World war II ended many of these dictatorships, replacing then
with democracies once again. however , eastern Europe ,which had remained under the control of
the soviet union , became democratic only in 1991 when the soviet union broke up .

After the World War II, the world experienced a new wave of democracy when countries
decolonized and became independent. India for example, became independent in 1947 and became
the world’s largest democracy. in the late 1990s and early 1960s , many African countries became
independent and chose democracy claim to be democracies although some are democracies in
name only , since their elections are not free and fair

The definition of democracy.

Long Man Dictionary (1983:161) Democracy-is a social equality and the right to take part in
decision-making. is a system of government in which laws , policies leadership and major
undertakings are directly or indirectly decided by the people of political system that requires a
popular vote .with freedom of speech and a fair trial framework.

Types of democracy
MUAPALA (2013:123) There are three types of democracy namely:

Direct democracy, citizens vote for make their own rules and laws .They don’t have elected
representatives to rule themand they don’t have a president or a prime minister.

Representative democracy

In a representative democracy, citizens vote for the representative candidates who will make rules
and laws on their behalf . The representative candidate who win majority of the votes are elected to
serve in the government or as head of state . Mozambique has a representative democracy.

5
Parliamentary democracy.
In a parliamentary democracy, for example in United Kingdom (UK), parliamentary
representatives appoint the government. The winning political party chooses a leader who becomes
the head of the state, who can be the monarch or the president, has no real power.
Living in a democratic country tend tobe more autonomous , because it encourages people to think
in terms of all social needs for better living standards for all citizens .
Advantages of Democracy
In a democracy, people expect the government to work for their welfare. This could be through
development of electricity, roads, through the provision of housing, employment, health, education.
Democracy gives room to correct the mistakes.
If there are conflicts, Democracy gives room to resolve the conflicts.
Democracy helps in improving the quality of decision making.
The dignity of all individuals gets enhanced due to Democracy.
Very importantly, Democracy helps in promoting equality among all the citizens of the country.
In a Democracy, the Governments are accountable, legitimate, and responsive to the expectations
and needs of the citizens.
All the citizens have equal weight in electing their Government representatives.
The impact of political democracy.
It has often been maintained that political democracy has a negative impact on economic growth,
particularly in less developed countries. Here, cross-national regressions of two different growth
variables on political democracy and on control variables, based on about 90 nations, are reported
for the 1960 to 1979 period. Control variables, gross domestic investment, school enrollment ratios,
and sometimes the military participation ratio. While first results seem to support the notion of a
negative growth effect of democracy, scrutiny reveals that this effect is no longer significant once
the analysis is restricted. While a fairly strong and negative impact of democracy on growth can be
demonstrated for nations where government revenue exceeds , elsewhere there is no effect at all. It
is not democracy itself that hurts the growth prospects of nations, but the combination of democracy
and strong state interference with the economy.

6
Conclusion
To sum up, living in a democratic country it involves multiple pathways within democratic regimes
which connects participatory institutions ,based on integrative social policies and an inclusive
state .Finally, it was found that most of the countries in the worldwide became independent after
world war II , the world experienced a new wave of democracy when countries decolonized and
became independent and so far the world is getting more revolutionary growth in the field of
science and technology as a result of democracy, however, living in a democratic country is a great
income.
